Condizione: Sehr gut. 172 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Lightly soiled dust jacket. Otherwise in very good condition. - Content: My experience with representations of what Toni Morrison has named white freedom extends, roughly, from Bette Daviss In This Our Life to, to date, very roughly, Jonathan Kozols Savage Inequalities. While it would be foolish for me to suppose that this experience, unremitting and complex as it is, has had no effect on my efforts to produce meaning from Horaces constructions, in his Epistles i, of his freedoms, neither can I believe that my personal exposure to countless representations of what freedoms mean (and dont mean) has reduced my attempts to explain these poems of Epistles i to a mere looking-glass exercise (one that inevitably misses the eternal and universal truths that are available to explainers who can transcend their space-times or go, in their mental spaceships, back in time). In any case, Pierre Macherey and Catherine Belsey have persuaded me, with their dissections of the interpretive fallacy, that any explanation of a literary work which fails to acknowledge its own origins and contexts (that is, some of its most crucial means of production) and its own constant danger of slipping back (the Horatian furtirn relabor comes to mind here) into interpretation misreads itself as well as its text. What I offer here are versions of Horaces constructions of freedoms in his strangest and least (in this era anyway) talked-about book (save for the Epodes). If Im sometimes impatient with other versions of that book, its not because I dont know better. What I know is, Im not offering here the single key to the essence of Epistles 1. Its merely the one I happen to have. Im grateful to the faculty, students, and staff of the Classics Department at Cornell for a very pleasant time while I was there with them to give the Townsend Lectures in which this book had its beginnings. I wish to express particular thanks to Phillip Mitsis and to David Mankin for their gentle criticisms and helpful advice as well as for their kindness in not carrying out the fascinating practical jokes they had designed for me as I performed my lectures. I am pleased to thank Pietro Pucci for the initial invitation to give these lectures and for the use of his office while he was away when I gave them; this dearest friend, who had introduced me to both Barthes and Svevo, knew that I would relish the ironies of that absence even as I enjoyed his presence-in-absence, for he was in fact there with me, a good, grinning reader over my shoulder, as I struggled (there, on his ground) with the ironies of one of his favorite poets and countrymen. To Patricia and Gordon Kirkwood I offer, now as before, my deepest thanks, for their warm encouragement and their wonderful friendship. The clearest statement of aporia cannot represent how great a value I place on Sandra Siegels generous hospitality, on her patient, always-on-target criticisms, and on her careful elucidations of what amnesia tends to mean today when we try to talk about freedoms. I am also grateful to Stuart Tave, Dean of Humanities, the University of Chicago, for arranging for me to have some free time in which to prepare the first drafts of the original lectures. Finally, three special debts. I thank my teacher W. S. Anderson, both for his encouragement and help when I was beginning my Latin studies and for the superb seminar on the Roman satirists which he gave at Berkeley in the early 1960s; his Horace has always remained with me, and anything that may be worthwhile in this book will have its roots in what he tried to teach me, way back then. For the exact and comprensivo suggestions of Kenneth Reckfo seem small: nan Marian Shotwel Chicago, Illinois Kenneth Reckford, a reader in a million, even a thousand thanks seem small: nam quicquid dixero minus erit. Finally, my thanks to Marian Shotwell for her wonderful editing. ISBN 9780801428685 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 518 Original hardcover with dust jacket.…
