The binding is probably from the late 19th century, and the case of the book is in good to very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling to the boards. the spine ends are bumped with a little damage to the cloth on the spine corners and there is a split in the cloth of about 1 1/2" on the bottom of the front spine edge and a split of about 1" on the bottom rear spine edge. The contents are tight and the pages generally clean with some of the works in the book having some scattered soiling, staining and light foxing. The soiling is mostly noticeable on the first and last pages of some of the works in the book. The frontispiece to the drama 'Rob Roy' has a 1" tear on the fore edge that has an old paper repair on the back and the title-page shows offsetting from the frontispiece.

David Ritchie, 1740-1811, whom Scott met in 1797, was the inspiration for his Black Dwarf character. He was a brushmaker by trade, but was treated with hostility by his neighbours for his diminished stature, and left Edinburgh for a semi-reclusive existence in Peebles.
