Prima edizione
Wrappers. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: None. First Edition. 8vo, light tan lettered wrappers, text with detailed commentary by Prof. Waltzing in his footnotes and frequent Latin parenthetical notes in his French textual translation, Index, viii, [ix-xii] + 357 pages. Tertullian, full name Quintus Septimius Florens Tertullianus, (c. 155 - c. 240 AD), was a prolific early Christian author from Carthage in the Roman province of Africa. Trained as a lawyer, he converted to Christianity in 192 and became a priest. This is his Apology [Lat.: Apologeticus], that is, his defence and polemic for Christianity. He was the first Christian author to produce an extensive corpus of Latin Christian literature. He also was an early Christian apologist and a polemicist against heresy, including contemporary Christian Gnosticism. Often acerbic, Tertullian has been called "the father of Latin Christianity" and "the founder of Western theology." Jean Pierre Waltzing (1857 - 1929) was a Belgian Latinist and professor at the University of Liège. He wrote several learned studies on Tertullian and Rome. Scholarly Edition of this great Apology for the Christian faith by the eloquent father Tertullian. This NF copy is immaculate, tight, unmarked, & very slightly and uniformly age-toned (as is often the case with French paper). Its only defect is a relatively clean 1" tear on the leading edge of its rear wrapper.

This book explores the fascinating world of professional corporations in the Roman Empire, shedding light on their integral role in the lives of Roman artisans and tradespeople. From humble beginnings in the republican era, these corporations flourished under imperial rule, providing members with essential services and a sense of community. The author delves into the intricate structure and governance of these organizations, revealing their religious and social functions. Guilds offered not only professional benefits, such as funerary assistance and legal protection, but also a profound sense of belonging and social elevation for their members. Through extensive analysis of inscriptions, the book reconstructs the daily lives of Roman artisans, shedding light on their struggles and aspirations. It highlights their strong ties to their guilds, which served as a safety net and a source of pride in a society that often marginalized manual labor. Ultimately, this book offers a compelling understanding of the significance of professional corporations in Roman society, highlighting their profound impact on the lives of ordinary individuals and the broader social fabric of the empire. This book presents a detailed analysis of Andrà Chà nier's literary career, exploring his multifaceted works through the lens of his tumultuous life. The author traces the evolution of Chà nier's writing from his early years as a neo-Hellenic poet to his transformation into a fierce satirist during the French Revolution. Through careful examination of his unpublished manuscripts and published works, the book unveils the profound influence of the classics on Chà nier's poetic style and thematic preoccupations. By situating Chà nier within the broader literary and historical context of the 18th century, the author sheds light on his unique position as a bridge between the Enlightenment and Romanticism. The book offers a nuanced perspective on Chà nier's significance, examining the enduring impact of his classical heritage on French literature while also highlighting the deeply personal and revolutionary elements that define his work. This book offers an in-depth analysis of the poetry of ancient Greek poet Bacchylides, situating the poet firmly within the literary landscape of his time. Bacchylides lived in the fifth century BCE, an important yet often overlooked figure between the towering giants Pindar and Simonides, and the author here examines Bacchylides' work as a continuation and expansion of the poetic tradition established by his predecessors. The book explores the influence of Homeric epics, the richness of Bacchylides' language, and the poet's unique examination of historical and mythological paradigms. Combining close readings of Bacchylides' odes with an exploration of their broader literary context, this book sheds new light on a significant but often neglected figure in classical poetry. This book provides a comprehensive and chronologically arranged collection of ancient Greek and Latin documents that offer unique glimpses into the lives and activities of Roman professional associations. Spanning the period from the Roman Republic to the fall of the Western Empire, these invaluable records provide evidence of the diverse range of professional guilds and colleges that existed during that era. These associations played crucial roles in the social and economic fabric of Roman society, serving not only as centers for professional activities and trade but also as important religious and social institutions. The documents reveal the internal organization of these guilds, their cultic practices, and their relationships with both local communities and the Roman state. Through these inscriptions, we gain Einblick into the everyday lives of Roman artisans, merchants, and other professionals. We learn about their patron deities, their financial practices, and even their personal relationships and rivalries. The documents provide a rich source of information for scholars studying the social and economic history of the Roman Empire, as well as for anyone interested in the lives and experiences of ordinary people in the ancient world.
