    From the library of Violet Stothert, a member of the Stothert family (of Stothert and Pitt fame). Extra illustrated, including etchings, original watercolour paintings and engravings bound in. Lavishly bound in later full straight grain morocco, with gilt titles and detailing to the spine, gilt decorative borders and dentelles. All edges gilt. Very smart, with just the odd instance of light rubbing and loss to the leather, one or two minor indentations to the boards. An abrasion running across the fore edge. All edges gilt, endpapers marbled. Ownership bookplate of Violet Stothert to front pastedown. The binding is firm, and leaves are a touch age-toned, with occasional spotting and light foxing. Complete with frontispiece, folding plan and thirteen engraved plates as issued; with seventy-four additional plates bound in, being etchings, engravings, portraits and topographical and including nine in colour. Including one double page original watercolour of Bradford-on-Avon, and another single page example. A beautiful copy, extra illustrated, in a lovely binding and from the library of a prominent Bath family.

Volume II, so labeled on title page (no frontis), begins with Letter V, pages [1]-60 [with route map Carlisle-S, N to Berwich, and S to Newcastle with several jaunts to the ocean en route]; Letter VI, pages [61]-112 [with a zigzag amble route map Ambleside-S through castle country to Naworth-Castle and Gilsland-N at 'The Picts' Wall];' and Letter VII, pages [113]-147 [with route map round the Bay of Morecambe from Manchester-S to Hawkshead, Winadermere and Ambleside-N]. The third volume has neither title page, nor frontis, which do not appear to be 'missing', begins with Letter VIII, pages [149]-182 [with route map Wellington -S to Manchester - N]; Letter IX, page [185]-259 [with route map Warwick-S to Watling Street-N]; Letter X, page [262]-300 [with route map Bath-S to Warwick-N]."Finis" emblem at end. Route maps are in text at the head of the letter. Condition is fair to poor. Half leather, spines heavily rubbed, splitting on third volume, with rubbed marbled boards. Front boards detached. Text is good. No former owner marks. Volumes are secured and consolidated in an archival acetate jacket. Warner (1763-1857) was an English clergyman, Curate of Bath, and writer of a considerable number of topographical books based on his walks and his interest in antiquarianism. The present volumes represent a first hand account of a wide range of environmental, cultural, antiquarian, and economic observations and insights. His work was said to influence more famous contemporaries like Jane Austen and William Wordsworth. Ships from Dinkytown in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Not available for priority/expedited shipping. An amusing satire on fashionable life in Bath by the Rector of Claverton, first published in 1807. This is a very good copy, uncut, in boards, with the printed label, priced at 5s. It also has a loosely inserted folded leaf, with the real names of 35 of the featured characters in manuscript, with a postscript: "this was all that I really can find out, but will do my best to find the rest".

    First Edition in very good condition. Half calf binding over marbled boards a little scuffed to top of spine; vellum corners; spine panel very good, gilt ruled and titled in gilt over red morocco label. A very sound and square copy. Endpapers clean other than '6/6' in a contemporary hand to front pastedown; text block remarkably fresh and unmarked. A fold out integral map to the front in very good condition is titled 'A New and Accurate Map of the Isle of Wight', printed and sold by T Baker Southampton - closed 4 cm tear to the right fore edge through a blank section; measures 38cm x 43cm. 2 further plates of illustrations of Roman coins plus appendix, errata and index. 311 pp. A very pleasing copy indeed.
