SB 312pp + map.Published Price £14.50 William Warre was the spirited scion of one of the great commercial dynasties which helped make Portugal Britainâs oldest ally. Brought up in Oporto, his nature was too fiery to take kindly to the dull business of exporting port, and he gratefully left the family firm to take up a military career after sticking the pigtails of his fatherâs Portuguese partner to his desk with sealing wax while the man was sleeping off a liquid lunch. Warre returned to his native city as a young staff officer in 1808, and thereafter witnessed most of the major actions of the conflict at close quarters. He took part in Sir John Mooreâs winter retreat to Corunna; the storming of the fortress of Ciudad Rodrigo, personally accepted the sword of the surrendering French commander of Badajoz after the famous siege; and fought at Vimieiro and Salamanca among many other actions. After the latter battle he was given the important task of reorganising the Portuguese Army and was Britainâs liasion man at the Portuguese court in Lisbon. This volume is composed of letters to Warreâs parents. He describes not only the military actions in which he was engaged, but also recounts the gossip among his fellow Staff officers and his own frank observations on the foibles of his Portuguese allies.

This is a Good Copy of this book in dark red cloth boards with title lettering in black to the front cover and lettered in gilt to the spine.This is an ex Westfield Library Copy with their bookplate to the front pastedown and one smaller presentation award plate to the front endpaper.Illustrated with a b&w frontispiece of Sir William Warre and towards the back of the book is a large fol out map of Spain and Portugal to illustrate the peninsula war.The map has a couple of tape repairs to it's edges,but it remains lovely and clean.Binding remains firm with slight dulling to the colour tone along spine.Light rubbing to spine tips.The book was acquired from a very Impressive private collection of Military History with a large proportion of the collection on The First World War,Napoleon,Regimental Histories,Battle of Waterloo and the Crimea,8vo 312pp First Edition [1909].
