Crucially, the exceptionally fragile, translucent protective tissue guard sheet remains fully intact and bound in place over the illustration plate. Includes the double-page historical map plate at the rear (a small-scale cartographic facsimile of John Bonner's iconic 1722 map of Boston). All internal plates are complete and original to the 1855 printing. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Authored by Dr. John Collins Warren, pioneering surgeon and president of the Boston Society of Natural History. This specialized text serves as one of the definitive early American arboreal natural history records, cataloging the health, measurements, and civic lore surrounding the historic focal point of the Common before it was ultimately destroyed by a winter storm in February 1876. CONDITION REPORT Very Good. Text block and plate signatures remain tight, secure, and straight. Interior pages show a clean appearance with some light, entirely localized age-foxing spots along the margins of the title page, completely consistent with mid-19th-century American paper stock. Exterior cloth boards display sharp corners, clean gilt presentation, and minor shelf-fading to the spine extremities. An incredibly crisp, well-preserved copy of a scarce piece of New England Americana.

After that, Fate introduced countless events which remain, to this day, fodder for paranormal documentaries and investigation. This Fall 1948 issue - the third issue ever - bears one of the handful of truly iconic Fate covers, that being "The Red River Witch" (see scan). 12mo, illustrated staple-bound wraps, 128 pp. A Near Fine copy - and this one is as near fine as near fine gets, with just touch micro-edgewear and an almost indiscernible degree of color fade as you look toward the spine. See scans. Standard toning to the interior newsprint-grade pages, but these are supple, clean and and unchipped. Highest Grade, particularly for a periodical which often shows substantial wear from use. This issue features articles on the memorable Red River Witch, Charles Fort, a Kenneth Arnold reprise on phantom lights in Nevada, The Valley of Never-Come-Back, America's White Sunworshippers (A Thor Heyerdahl piece), The Flying Jigsaw Puzzle, America's Most Famous Ghost Story, The Temple Girls of India, The Black Art, Two Girls, One Body, The Devil, ESP events and of course much, much else, including the standard Departments, always engrossing in themselves.
