"The story of the Kreeger Collection begins with the intensely personal vision of David Lloyd Kreeger and his wife, Carmen. David Kreeger (1909-1990) was far more than just a successful businessman, he was a true Renaissance man, a lawyer, an insurance executive, and a profound lover of music and art. Born in Highland Park, New Jersey, Kreeger?s journey eventually led him to Washington DC, where he rose to prominence as chairman of Government Employees Insurance Company (GEICO). Yet, his true passion lay outside the corporate boardroom, in the world of classical music, where he was a gifted amateur violinist, and in the captivating realm of modern art. Alongside Carmen Kreeger, his partner in life and in collecting, David embarked on a remarkable journey to assemble a collection that was both eclectic and deeply discerning. Their collecting philosophy was not driven by trends or investment potential, but by a genuine, heartfelt connection to the art itself. They sought pieces that spoke to them on an emotional and intellectual level, leading them to acquire works across various movements and cultures, unified by an underlying thread of artistic excellence and innovation. They didn?t just buy art; they lived with it, each piece thoughtfully integrated into their daily lives within their custom-built home.". Signed and Inscribed.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. First Edition. Autograph; Quarto; xvi, 237 pages; Inscribed and signed by the author on half-title "To Bibi / A dear and true friend / whom I admire and / appreciate so much. / Warren / 1982" Bilingual text throughout. Translated into French by Richard Walters. 347 illustrations. Very near fine copy in near fine dust jacket. A fabulous catalogue with artful photographs of the many African sculptures and other items in Robbins collection. Warren Murray Robbins (1923 â" 2008) was an American art collector whose collection of African art led to the formation of the National Museum of African Art at the Smithsonian Institution. It was the late 1950s when Robbins, then a cultural attachà for the State Department, bought his first piece of African artâ"a carved wooden figure of a Yoruba man and woman of Nigeriaâ"in an antiques shop in Hamburg, Germany. The next year, he bought 32 other figures, masks and textiles, also in Hamburg, and by 1964, he was displaying his collection in a Capitol Hill townhouse. Frederick Douglass once owned the house. And as his collection grew, his museum became a complex of 9 townhouses, 16 garages and 2 carriage houses. In 1987, having surpassed 5,000 pieces, Robbinsâ collection moved to its Mall location, becoming the National Museum of African Art.; Signed by Author.
