No Binding. Condizione: Collectible-Good. Original black-and-white group portrait photograph taken on the occasion of a staff presentation to Edmond D. Coblentz at the San Francisco Examiner. Mounted on white matboard. About fifty-two sitters are in the photo. The setting is an editorial newsroom. A desk with a typewriter and a bunch of papers on top is in the foreground toward the right. Printed at the bottom of the photo is the title and the following text identifying the photographer: "R. J. Waters & Co., 717 Market St." Matboard: 13 3/4" x 7 3/4." Photo: 12" x 6 1/2." Matboard is very clean and intact except for light age toning and minuscule bumping to corners. Photo is mostly clean and intact but has several wrinkles and chips on the left and right edges. The largest chip measures about 1/2" x 1/2" and affects a small part of the photo. The scratches and wrinkles on the right extend from top to bottom but only affect one of the sitters. A wrinkle on the left affects two of the sitters. The rest of the photo is very clean and unmarked. A Good copy. Edmond David Coblentz (1882-1959) was an American newspaper reporter, editor, and publisher associated with Hearst Newspapers. Coblentz worked for several newspapers owned by William Randolph Hearst. Among the newspapers he worked for were the San Francisco Examiner, the San Francisco Call (later, the San Francisco Call-Bulletin), and the New York American. Notably, Coblentz was an editor for the San Francisco Examiner from 1907-1913 and 1915-1925, the San Francisco Call from 1913-1915, and the New York American from 1927-1934. He also worked as an editorial consultant for Hearst Papers from 1950-1959. Edmond was married to Lolita (nee Heyneman).…

Photographs of full rigged sailing ships, clipper ships, whaling barks, tramp steamers, steam trawlers, and a torpedo boat are in the collection, many stamped Waters Company or R.J. Waters & Co., San Francisco. Ships from all around the world are represented including Scotland, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Sweden, and the United States. Many show San Francisco docks, skyline and headlands as the setting, one depicting Alcatraz in the background. In very good condition. The photographs measure approximately 8 inches by 10 inches. Collected in four large folios. R.J. Waters, a lesser-known figure in the realm of early photography, made notable contributions to documenting maritime life and industrial advancements in the late nineteenth century. His collection of photographs captured the transition from sail to steam power, showcasing ships, harbors, and coastal communities with remarkable detail. The album begins with twelve views of Stanford University, followed by seven views of California missions including Mission Dolores, Mission Santa Barbara, Mission San Gabriel, Mission San Fernando, Mission San Buenaventura, and a portrait of three elderly Native American women at Mission San Luis Rey. The remaining twenty-seven photos offer views of San Francisco, with shots of Fort Point, Sutro Baths, the Cliff House, Golden Gate Park, downtown and Chinatown. In 1892, R. J. Waters opened a photography studio at 1945 California Street, and later moved to 110 Sutter Street. He was a multi-talented and entrepreneurial commercial photographer, with a keen understanding of the use of the photograph as souvenir object. He created everything from a handsome series of Lake Tahoe boudoir cards to novelty photographic playing cards to impressive panoramas of the 1906 Earthquake.
