From the rear cover: "Although he belonged to an American generation of writers deeply influenced by the high modernist revolt 'against nature' and against the self-imposed limits of realism to a palpable world, William Faulkner reveals throughout his works an abiding sensitivity to the natural world. The eleven essays that make up this volume, including a paper written by the acclaimed novelist William Kennedy, explore the place of 'the unbuilt world' in Faulkner's fiction. They give particular attention to the social, mythic, and economic significance of nature, to the complexity of racial identity, and to the inevitable clash of gender and sexuality. These essays were presented in 1996 as papers at the Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference, held annually at the University of Mississippi.". First Printing of the First Edition. Soft Cover. Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Benjamin Franklin, William Watson, Jean-Antoine Nollet, Thomas Simpson, and many others. The following papers are all found in one volume (facsimile reprint) of the Philosophical Transactions, London (printed in New York by Krauss Reprint and Johnson Reprint corporations, 1963. Reprinted with permission of the Royal Society of London, the only authorized facsimile edition. Volume 47, 1751-1752, 571pp with folding plates. Bound in a sturdy cloth. Ex-library with the usual markings: paper spine label at spine bottom, rubber stamps on text block faces, bookplate. The text is very clean and fresh. Uncommon to find these works as hardbound copies! **A Stone-Cold Classic and Important Paper in the History of Electricity** Benjamin Franklin, "A Letter of Benjamin Franklin, Esq; to Mr. Peter Collinson, F.R.S. concerning an Electrical Kite" pp 565-567, tucked away at nearly the very end of the volume. This is followed by William Watson, "Concerning the Electrical Experiments in England upon Thunder-Clouds" pp 567-570. Jean-Antoine Nollet, "Observations on the Grotta de Cani" pp 48-61, about the accumulation of noxious and lethal gases in a cave—this was CO2 evidently, preceding the "fixed air" of Black by a couple of years. Experiments concerning the deadly gas accumulating in a cave near Naples, an important early investigation of what we now identify as carbon dioxide. This is also an experimental precursor in the long history of CO2 and its Greenhouse Effect, though that will be another 100+ years. Thomas Simpson, "A General Method for Exhibiting the Value of an Algebraic Expression involving several radical quantities in an infinite series: wherein Sir Isaac Newton's theorem for invoking a binomial, with another from the same author, relating to the roots of equations, are demonstrated." in an Infinite Series" pp 20-27. A substantial contribution to algebraic series, including demonstrations involving Newton's binomial theorem. "A general method to expand algebraic expressions with multiple radicals into an infinite series. Proof and demonstration of Sir Isaac Newton's theorem for expanding a binomial. Demonstration of another theorem by Newton concerning the roots of equations."--MacTutor A myriad of interesting and significant papers, as well as many entries that are just very curious and inviting: papers on water spouts, a new Water-Engine, wasps, whales ("and a machine for killing them"), "woman, the bones of a foetus extracted from one"), and so on. And this was just the Ws in the index.…
