Interior with minor signs of wear.; Catalogue from the exhibition 'Sawasa Japanese E…xport Art in Black And Gold 1650-1800' held at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, November 28, 1998-February 28, 1999.; The exhibition 'Sawasa, Japanese export art in black and gold', with this accompanying publication, offers a first overview of Sawasa wares from the 17th and 18th centuries. Sawasa is the Japanese name given to artefacts made by Asian artists and craftsmen, adopting European models combined with Japanese and Chinese materials and decorative motives. This decoration consists of refined gilt relief and engravings on a lustrous lacquered surface. Until recently these artefacts were called shakudo, after the copper, gold, arsenic alloy that was used in Japan for decorative purposes among others on sword furniture. In the case of Sawasa the metal may or may not be shakudo but the black surfaces are always lacquer which is not necessarily the case with shakudo. The combination of black patinated metal with gold has a long history, going back to the second millennium BC in the Eastern Mediterranean. From there the technique spread to Italy and India. Later the metal was adopted in other parts of Asia. Sawasa wares are the result of cultural interaction between Asia and Europe. As a consequence of global trade in the 17th century mutual interest arose in the peculiarities of each other's culture. The Dutch and other Europeans brought rare objects back from their travels which whetted the taste for exotic rarities. At the same time in the Eurasian metropolis Batavia, now Jakarta, a wealthy governmental and commercial elite arose which had access to the production centres of these transcultural artefacts and the means to acquire them. The earliest sawasa objects are sword and hanger hilts and tobacco boxes ordered in Japan from Batavia. Sawasa soon became fashionable in wealthy circles in Batavia and to a lesser extent in Europe. Sawasa demonstrates not only the intercontinental commercial connections created by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) but also mutual cultural influences between Europe and Asia.

These particular volumes span modern English history, from 1558-1945. Watson is a 1985 reprint. Black, Clark, Davies, Williams and Woodward are 1985 reprints of the second edition. Taylor is a 1986 reprint, while Ensor is a 1988 reprint.In the publisher's original cloth, in the original unclipped dust wrappers. Each volume includes maps, graphs and tables, including a folding genealogical table in Clark, as well as a folding map in Taylor, 4 folding maps in Watson, and 2 folding maps in Woodward. Collated complete.The original series, that spanned from Roman Britain to the beginning of the First World War, was first completed in 1961. However, the series was later expanded to the end of the Second World War, leading to a further volume by Taylor and updated editions. Despite all writing the same series, each historian brought their own rigorous scholarship to their volumes. This included a debate on what constituted 'English History', whether to involve other nations in the United Kingdom or not. In the publisher's original cloth, in the original unclipped dust wrappers. Externally, excellent condition. Dust wrappers are generally bright and clean with the occasional mark. Protective coating is adhered to the wrappers and cannot be removed. Marks are heavier to wrappers of Watson, Davies and Woodward on the front, with heavier marks to wrapper spine of Woodward. Sunning to wrappers of Clark, Watson, and to the extremities of Williams, Davies and Woodward. End papers are bright and clean, with very minor spotting to end papers of Taylor. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Near Fine. Unknown (illustratore). book.

All volumes other than I B uniformly bound in blue cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering to spine. Volume I… B has black cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering on the spine and, being a later addition to the series, is printed on different, acidic-free, paper. 8vos. All volumes are in near fine condition, being neat, clean, bright and tight throughout. All volumes in their original dust wrappers, very slightly shelf worn and lightly bumped at edges, with a couple of short creases and scuffs here and there. The Oxford History of England was originally planned as a 14 volume series spanning the history of England from Roman times to the outbreak of the first world war. However, since the first edition of the first volume appeared in 1931, the series has been substantially revised and enlarged, with some volumes being replaced by revised editions and a 15th volume taking the story to the end of the second world war added. Some of the volumes are considered the classic work on their period but overall the reputation of the series is mixed. The volumes contained in this complete set are: I A - Roman Britain; I B - The English Settlements; II - Anglo-Saxon England; III - From Domesday to Magna Carta; IV - The Thirteenth Century; V - The Fourteenth Century; VI - The Fifteenth Century; VII - The Earlier Tudors; VIII - The Reign of Elizabeth; IX - The Early Stuarts; X - The Later Stuarts; XI - The Whig Supremacy; XII - The Reign of George III; XIII - The Age of Reform; XIV - England, 1870-1914; XV - English History, 1914-1945; The Consolidated Index.
