Such is the legend of the merchant bankers that one tends to think of international intrigue, world power, empire building or toppling. Shrouded in mystery, they are among the least known yet most interesting of all financial institutions as they merge great companies, make gigantic loans to governments (often averting chaos), underwrite stock and bond issues, and, in general, undertake spectacular risks which ordinary banks could never consider. "Letting in daylight upon magic," and furnishing an absorbing inside look at the fabulous world of international high finance THE MERCHANT BANKERS draws profiles in depth of seven of the world's paramount merchant~banking houses. Joseph Wechsberg writes of Hambros, which has headquarters in the City of London: "There is a rumor that Hambros is not interested in deposits below ten thousand pounds, but friends and their friends are always welcome." (When Queen Elizabeth came to lunch, Hambros built her a pile of gold, silver and platinum worth exactly one million pounds.) London's oldest merchant~banking house is Baring Brothers which made the "most fantastic transaction in the whole history of merchant banking" ~ the transfer of the Spanish~American silver treasure to Napoleon. The youngest merchant bank in the City of London, and one of the most powerful, is S. G. Warburg & Co. "Warburg has been called the City's "most spectacular newcomer," and "the postwar wonder of merchant banking." Describing the enormous scale of financial operations in all its dramatic and entertaining detail, the author explains how Raffaele Mattioli, Italy's leading banker, has "injected a feeling of humanity and a sense of philosophy into the cool world of banking"; how Hermann Josef Abs, who heads the Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt, probably knows a great deal more than any other German banker about the operation of the top German firms; how Wall Street's Lehman Brothers, who began in the South as resourceful traders in cotton, can be accurately termed "money~magicians." But, for a hundred years, supremacy in international banking was held by the Rothschilds ~ a family that has been a legend for generations and whose name is a symbol of wealth. "The wealth of the Rothschilds," says Mr. Wechsberg, "is more than that of millions; it is history, pride, power, charity, and, above all, integrity." It is a kind of wealth shared by all the great houses as the author clearly reveals in this fascinating study of the magic and mystery of the merchant bankers.
