This is a nice book with fraying at corners and spine with several 1in spine tears, light sunning on spine and along top board edge. Interior has light page toning, missing title pg, previous owner's nameplate on front pastedown, and light edgewear to ffep & half-title pg. Binding is shaken and cracking at four places. Illustrations offer light humor and whimsy and strike winsome note of fantasy. Considerable soilage to fabric of boards, and minor bowing of boards. Missing prelim endpaper. Marginal dampstain, mostly faint or non-disconcerting, but affecting first few leaves in upper right and then fades progressively with each passing leaf. A fair to good copy.

Inspiration for his work came from the theaters of children which he framed with a decorative element. The book was originally published in 1884 following the first publication of E. Plon, "Nourrit et Cie Vieilles chansons et danses pour les petits enfants" in 1883. Very nice copy despite tiny closed tears and corner chips/unraveling to the cloth covers. book.

L'image encadre le texte et Maurice BOUTET de MONVEL n'hésite pas à faire piètiner ses petits personnages la ligne horizontale qui sépare le texte et l'image. Les petits personnages de Maurice BOUTET de MONVEL évoluent dans des frises, formant des ribambelles, encadrant les partitions et les paroles des chansons.
