Jean Weil Proust décédera de néphrite l'année suivante, le 26 septembre 1905. Nadar a retouché son portrait, et fait disparaître les ombres et défauts qui vieillissent le visage. Michel Schneider note que la mère du narrateur dans la Recherche est évidemment inspirée de celle de l'auteur lui-même. Jeanne Proust est en effet née Jeanne Weil en 1849 dans une famille juive de la bourgeoisie éclairée. On a beaucoup fait état de la complicité intellectuelle qui l'unissait à Marcel. Proust ne rédige la Recherche qu'après le décès de sa mère, événement en quelque sorte libérateur pour la création de son chef d'uvre. Le chagrin qu'il éprouve au moment du décès est transposé sur sa grand-mère, car dans la Recherche, maman ne meurt pas. Elle y est citée plus de cinq cents fois.
