[Paris, 5 déc. 1904], en médaillon (159 mm) Contrecollée sur cartonnage souple Crédit du photographe au coin inférieur gauche Infime tache en marge inférieure du carton, légères brunissures Timbre humide de la colle…ction [Suzy] Mante-Proust au verso Célèbre portrait de Jeanne Weil Proust, moins d'un an avant sa mort « Celle dont le jeune Marcel craignait le plus d'être séparé était une femme sensible [] Elle donna à son fils le goût de la musique et l'aida à traduire Ruskin » (Le monde de Proust vu par Nadar) Cette précieuse épreuve a été conservé par la famille Proust jusqu'en 2016 La traduction de La Bible d'Amiens de son fils paraît en cette même année 1904. Jean Weil Proust décédera de néphrite l'année suivante, le 26 septembre 1905. Nadar a retouché son portrait, et fait disparaître les ombres et défauts qui vieillissent le visage. Michel Schneider note que la mère du narrateur dans la Recherche est évidemment inspirée de celle de l'auteur lui-même. Jeanne Proust est en effet née Jeanne Weil en 1849 dans une famille juive de la bourgeoisie éclairée. On a beaucoup fait état de la complicité intellectuelle qui l'unissait à Marcel. Proust ne rédige la Recherche qu'après le décès de sa mère, événement en quelque sorte libérateur pour la création de son chef d'uvre. Le chagrin qu'il éprouve au moment du décès est transposé sur sa grand-mère, car dans la Recherche, maman ne meurt pas. Elle y est citée plus de cinq cents fois.
