Er war unter anderem Mitglied der Academien zu Paris und Petersburg, Astronoms der Marine, Aufsehers des königlichen physicalischen Cabinets". In seiner Funktion als Bibliothekar war er zwischen 1773 und 1777 nahm er nur sechs Mal an den wöchentlichen Akademiesitzungen teil ( vgl. Alexis-Marie Rochon (1741-1817), savant astronome et opticien. Danielle Fauque, S. 11).Louis Antoine de Bougainville war ein Offizier, Seefahrer und Schriftsteller. Er umsegelte als erster Franzose die Welt. 1772 wurde Bougainville zum persönlichen Sekretär von Louis XV. erhoben.
