Aggiungi al carrelloLever Arch Folder. Condizione: Good+. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Unique collection of Lieutenant Watson's letters, typed by the family and preserved in a contemporary lever-arch brown file. The letters start on May 21st 1915 with a description of his arrival in the trenches, a number of Officers named and interpreter Philippe. Letter (II) The guns were very busy all yesterday and at night one sees the shell flashes like summer lightning, otherwise there is no war beyond rumours of a spy shot here and there" and later 21 June " I see they gave our attack the big headlines in the papers- as I wrote last under spasmodic shelling I forgot many details. Prisoners returning under escort in the heat of the day-bearheaded, sweating, muddied grey. there would have been more.a few got what they tried to avoid by surrender". Back in town "back to back with arms tied to the wheel spokes two British defaulters . under Field Imprisonment no.1". 23rd June. "much discussed Cpl Rabbetts died the day after he was hit, small wonder as it went through the brain. but he is a serious loss" 26 June " Tonight we are due to dig . in the newly captured German trenches which ought to be good fun" On July 7th there is a detailed description of a "Minny" plump in the trench, two men were killed and two wounded. Copies of telegrams indicate that he was killed in action July 30th and this is supported by "His Colonel's letter" describing his death and mentioning the loss of 52 officers and a very large number of men. Another handwritten letter dated August 13 from a "family friend " Archibald Don with the 10th Black Watch and at that time in the UK comments on how "really first rate" are the letters etc. c.175pp., and clearly typed with some handwritten corrections at the time. Important and very fluent record of a young man at war and the waste of a life.
