Wraps. Condizione: Good. First Edition. Illustrated blue wraps. Rear interior wrap with a photo of the author. (40 pp). With a few small inset illustrations. SIGNED, with a brief dedication, by the author, on the inside rear cover. Handwritten '1st edition' at the same locale, perhaps done by the author. A collection of poetry mostly reflecting on life at and near the sea, drawing on personal experiences, and using mostly a pastoral form to portray his imagery. One poem, 'From the Thresher,' perhaps draws on his experience serving aboard the Robert Conrad in search of the lost submarine. Austin West, born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, was a self-taught poet, who used his time spent as a lumberjack, sailor, fisherman, deep sea diver and other occupations to inform his writing. GOOD condition. Moderate uneven soiling to the wraps, with browning, uneven darkening and fading present, especially to the extremities. Heavy creasing along the extremities. Interior clean and solid.

PAPERBACK, very good, lightly dented along left edge. INSCRIBED and SIGNED on title page To *** from Austin West. WEST, AUSTIN. My Garden. A book of poetry. Portland, Maine: House of West, Dale Rand Printing, 2006, 79pp., . Transcribed from handwritten notes by Penny Swiger. Collected and edited by Penny Swiger and Deirdre Nice. - Maine poet. - Austin West has been published in over 200 journals and newspapers and has had at least eight books of poetry published throughout his long life. He was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts on June 13,1913 to Walter and Martha Weschkolofsky. Austin was married for fifty years to his first wife Doris; braider of rugs, costumer designer and consummate seamstress. After Doris' death and a subsequent fire at their antique shop in Bridgton, Maine that they had owned and run together for over 25 years, he was left with only the nightgown that Doris had made for him years earlier. Austin's extensive and impressive life journey includes the study of psychology at Harvard, economics and selling at Michigan State, and automotive mechanics at the University of Houston. In 1942 at the age of 35, he enlisted and served in the Navy for two years during WWII on both a destroyer escort looking for submarines and on the research ship Robert Conrad looking for the ill fated Thresher. Austin has worked as a chaplain in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He has worked as a fisherman, seaman, welder, pipe fitter, ship rigger, farmer, florist, mountain climber, teacher, steeplejack, deep-sea diver and has sold everything from antiques to insurance. His favorite jobs were those that allowed him to work outside. Deeply influenced by Thoreau and Emerson, West started writing poetry at the age of 44 while working on a ferry as a way to entertain children along for the ride. He continues to write poetry as idea's come to him.

Aggiungi al carrello2pp., landscape 8vo. In envelope, with stamp and postmark, addressed to 'Miss I. Forbes-Robertson | 30a. Collingham Place | Earls Court | S.W.5.' In good condition, lightly aged. The first part of the letter concerns a lost or stolen letter and cheque. 'Of course I shall pay you - but it is s. sweet of you to suggest the present'. She repeats information she gave in the letter about which artists' materials she would like: 'Paper for water-colour is becoming scarce too but I have some at the moment'. She turns to Ida's father Eric Forbes-Robertson, who studied in Paris with Gaugin: 'It is splendid about the Gaugin drawing of your Father; I shall hope to see it one day & any sketch books with your Father's work. He has made some beautiful little studies of trees, I remember.'.
