It tells the story of the poets who have held the title, from Ben Jonson, the first official Poet Laureate, to the present day. The author examines the changing nature of the role over time, from its origins in royal patronage to its modern status as a celebrated literary honor. Exploring wider literary and historical contexts, the book illuminates the complex relationship between the Poet Laureate and the cultural and political landscapes of their respective eras. It sheds light on the ways in which these poets have reflected and shaped British identity, capturing the triumphs, challenges, and transformations of their time. Ultimately, this book offers a fascinating glimpse into an enduring tradition, revealing the profound impact the Poet Laureate has had on English literature and society at large.
