Soft cover. Condizione: As New. 1st Edition. A very clean unmarred copy. The Crescent Moon : The Asian Face of Islam in New Zealand opens new doors into the lives of the largest group of Muslims in New Zealand and in the world as a whole: those of Asian descent. Photographer Ans Westra and writer Adrienne Jansen - armed with a camera and a tape recorder - take a trip through the country, catching up with people in their everyday lives. They meet a very diverse group, ethnically, culturally, and theologically. There are lawyers and farmers, computer trainers and butchers, fourth generation New Zealanders and new migrants. They talk with disarming honesty about the media, about 9/11, about identity, about their faith - but mostly they just talk about who they are and their life in New Zealand today. Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 160 pages. clean tidy copyThis timely and visionary new book includes 137 Westra photographs of the New Ze aland landscape, with text contributions from Hone Tuwhare, Russel Norman, Brian Turner, David Eggleton and David Lange, who wrote a short piece for Ans as part of an unreaslied book project in 1987. Well known for her iconic black and whit e documentation of Maori culture, Ans Westra is also known for her colour works, which show concern for New Zealand's destiny, an island exploited by various w aves of settlement. Shot with Ans' trusty Rolleiflex camera, the sometimes damn ing images in Our Future have been made over the last 20 years. The purpose of the book is to give a directive to the country, an awareness of things changed a nd lost within its short history. If we don't plan for the long term and keep ta king stop-gap measures, we leave very little behind. Instead of becoming like th e rest of the world, this beautiful place should become a shining example of hop e for survival in a newly balanced environment. Ans Westra. ans westra (illustratore).…

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 1st Edition. MAORI. Text by James Ritchie, photos by Ans Westra. Publisher: A.H. & A.W. Reed, Wellington, New Zealand, 1967. FIRST EDITION, VERY SCARCE. Very good hardback with jacket, binding firm, light speckled foxing to cloth boards, pages very good, light tanning to edges. Jacket has some creasing, marks, rubbing and chipping with a small repaired tear to top edge. 231 pages, illustrated. Ans Westra is renowned for her long and productive career, one of the longest in the history of New Zealand photography. Considered part photographer and part social anthropologist, she took a staggering 220,000 images, including many powerful black-and-white photographs of Maori taken over five decades. The cultural value of her work grows constantly. Between 1945 and 1986, the proportion of Maori living in New Zealand cities exploded from 26 to nearly 80 per cent. Westra captured this rapid urbanisation with her lens, providing the most comprehensive documentation of Maori culture over that 60-year period of significant change. At times unwelcome, Ans Westra documented Maori when no one else was. ALL PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK. All books are sent with free courier postage within New Zealand. Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Washday at the Pa By Ans Westra. VERY SCARCE. TRUE FIRST EDITION 1964. Published By School Publications Branch Department Of Education Wellington. R. E Owen, Government Printer. 1964. First printing. Softback in very good condition. Binding firm, no inscriptions, some light shelf-wear, rubbing and small abrasions to covers, minor marks, pages excellent, no inscriptions. One of the best copies I have seen. This is one of the withdrawn first issues of this controversial New Zealand publication. Shows 37,000 on publishing page, and 'A Bulletin For Schools' on front cover. It was later reprinted by Caxton Press. Controversy: Washday at the Pa was a school bulletin published in 1964 by the Education Department s School Publications section. Ans Westra wrote the text and took the photographs during a visit to Ruatoria. The bulletin charts a day in the life of a rural Maori family with nine children. The family was given the fictitious name Wereta to protect their identity, and their location was given, not as Ruatoria, but near Taihape . This family lived in a run down, rural cottage, though they were later to move to a State house nearer town. It was the images of the Westra's living conditions that caused enormous controversy. Some believed the sub-standard living conditions shown implied that these conditions were representative of all Maori. The title was also deemed to be misleading, as the family did not live in a pa, but in a private dwelling. The most controversial image was of a girl standing barefoot on top of a stove. According to tikanga Maori, the body should not come into contact with a food preparation area in this way. It was believed by some that no Maori child would do such an offensive thing of her own accord Westra was accused of posing her subjects. As a result of the objections, all 38,000 copies of Washday at the Pa were withdrawn from circulation ALL PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK.
