A beautiful and charming miniature book containing an account about the historic voyage of The Jupiter, a hot air balloon, on August 17, 1859 from Lafayette, Indiana to Crawfordsville, Indiana. The balloon carried 123 letters and twenty-three circulars on its voyage. This journey of The Jupiter marked the first official airmail delivery by the United States Post Office. The Jupiter was piloted by its owner and designer, John Wise (1808-1879), an American balloonist who contributed many scientific innovations to the field of ballooning. The book includes a brief historical account about Wise, The Jupiter, and artist Austin Briggs by printer James Lamar Weygand; the text of an article that originally appeared in the Lafayette Courier on August 18, 1859; progressive draft illustrations by Briggs for a 7c air stamp commemorating the voyage of The Jupiter; and a tipped-in postage stamp from 1959 (not 1859) commemorating The Jupiter's voyage. Back colophon: "100 copies printed and bound by James Lamar Weygand, Press of the Indiana Kid, Nappanee, Indiana, for Maestro Books, 1967.".
