His influence and reforms at the Admiralty were important in the early professionalisation of the Royal Navy. This edition, initially published in 10 volumes between 1893 and 1899, is reasonably complete but remains coy about Pepeys's sexual adventures. For the acknowled complete and unexpurgated edition you need to get the editio ppublished between 1970 and 1983 by Bell & Hyman and by the University of California Press. Despite the Victorian reticence the work is a fascinating item to read and gives great insight in ordinary life in the Restoration period. . . . The set weighs approach 4kg but the price shown, together with the default postage cost, will cover carriage within the UK. In the case of overseas order there may need to be a small carriage supplement, depending on destination.
