Condizione: Very good. - Hugh Cairns, 1st Earl Cairns' signature at the bottom left of a 3 inch high by 4-1/4 inch wide clipping from an envelope. "London Official Paid" is stamped in red at top right above Miss Nicholson's address penned in an unknown hand. The autograph is mounted with glue from the verso onto a larger sheet of heavier stock clipped from an album. Very good. The Irish-born British statesman Hugh McCalmont Cairns, 1st Earl of Cairns (1819-1885) was a prominent Conservative statesman in the House of Lords. He served as Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain under Benjamin Disraeli. Cairns was the 17th Chancellor of the University of Dublin, serving in that position from 1867 to 1885.

Condizione: Very good. - A portion of a manila envelope addressed and signed in blue ink: "Mr. Chamberlain Brown / 145 W. 45th St. NY. / from / Miss Mady Christians". There are a few light creases to the envelope. Very good. Born in Vienna, actor Marguerita Maria "Mady" Christians moved to New York with her family in 1912. After returning to Europe to study under Max Reinhardt and appearing in a number of European films, she moved back to the U.S. where she made a successful career in theatre and film until she was blacklisted during the McCarthy era. She starred in Lillian Hellman's "Watch on the Rhine" on Broadway and originated the title role in the 1944 play "I Remember Mama". Her last movie roles were in the film adaptation of Arthur Miller's "All My Sons" and in "Letter from an Unknown Woman". Some attributed her death of a stroke at the age of 59 to the stress of being blacklisted.
