And how glad I was I did, because I soon found I was alone in the woods with a wit, an illiterate savant who spoke hardly a word that wasn't worth recording. I didn't like to take notes in his presence. I was afraid he'd either dry up or turn self-conscious and silly. So I had to keep retiring to the bush . . and there hastily scribble down as much of what he said as I could remember. . . These notes were turned into the MS for a book and then, when I'd finished, I learned that Joe Lavally was dead. So I made some revisions and what began as the report of a canoe trip became the obituary of a Red Indian.' 191 pages. Stated first edition, copyright 1948. Photos available upon request.
