An autograph letter signed by Alfred Wigan (1818-1878) concerning performers in "Hush Money" at Windsor Castle to receive payment at the treasury for their services by…Mr. Charles Kean, dated January 30, 1857. Alfred Wigan was an actor and theater manager. Along with Charles Kean, he took part in the first Royal Command Performance on December 28, 1848 at Windsor Castle by command of Queen Victoria. The play was "The Merchant of Venice." At the time of the present letter, Wigan was actor-manager of the Olympic Theatre in London. He later managed the St. James Theatre, and when the Queens' Theatre opened in 1867 he became its actor-manager and formed a new company which included Charles Wyndham, Henry Irving and Ellen Terry. Charles Kean (1811-1868) was the son of Shakespearean actor Edmund Kean, the lessee/manager of the Princess Theatre in London and was famous for his Shakespearean revivals.

The letter is addressed to 'My dear Mrs. Wigan' and begins: 'I am sorry to find that the friends I mentioned to you, have decided on another house already but if I hear of any one else who would be glad of your very charming house, I will not fail to mention it.' She thanks h…er for offering to 'help Charlie some day with a word or two of advice in case he should eventually decide on choosing the Stage as his career'. She would be 'very grateful for your valuable opinion on many points connected with it'. She hopes Mrs Wigan is 'will be able soon to obtain change of air & scene, which you must so much need'. Mrs Brookfield's younger son Charles Hallam Elton Brookfield (1857-1913) did indeed take to the stage, finding success as an actor, author and playwright.
