Handelsmannen Sebastian Thams donation av 30000 dlr kmt år 1727 till Riddarhuset, för dess ungdoms vetenskapliga förkovran, resulterade först 1746 i den serie föreläsningar i naturvetenskap och med lärdomshistorisk bakgrund, som kom att kallas de Thamiska. Ursprungligen föll ansvaret för dessa på KVA:s sekreterare, då Pehr Elvius, vilken också höll föredrag säsongen 1746-47. Den extra arbetsbördan blev honom dock för tung och både han och efterföljaren Wargentin nådde kompromissen att istället trycka uppsatser av motsvarande innehåll i Handlingarna. Stralcio da 'Opuscoli scelti sulle scienze e sulle arti tratti dagli Atti delle Accademie e dalle Collezioni Filosofiche, e Letterarie', vol. II, primo periodico scientifico milanese edito dal 1778 al 1803 che, sotto la cura di Carlo Amoretti e Francesco Soave, raccoglieva saggi e memorie dei principali scienziati dell'epoca. Estratto di una memoria di Johan Carl Wilcke, fisico svedese (Wismar 1732 - Stoccolma 1796) in cui e' descritta la macchina di Papin, secondo pero' una semplificazione apportata proprio da Wilcke. Viene quindi descritto l'uso di questa macchina in cucina, antenata della pentola a pressione: "il vantaggio di questa pentola riguardo alle comuni si e' che nel far cuocere la carne si risparmiano per lo meno tre quarti si' di tempo che di carbone.".
