Wilhelm Meinardus hatte in seiner Dissertation 1894 die Aufspaltung der innertropischen Konvergenzzone durch eine ganzjährige Westwindzone beiderseits des Äquators fest[gestellt], fand für diese bahnbrechende Erkenntni…s jedoch zu Lebzeiten keine Anerkennung" (DBE). Nach mehrjähriger Forschungstätigkeit im Potsdamer Observatorium, im Meteorologischen und im Meereskundlichen Institut in Berlin wurde er Professor für Geographie an der Universität Münster und lehrte von 1920 bis 1935 in Göttingen. Er beschäftigte sich vor allem mit der Klimatologie und Meereskunde. 192833 war er Herausgeber der Allgemeinen Länderkunde der Erde'. Als seine bedeutendste Leistung gilt die Auswertung des Beobachtungsmaterials der deutschen Südpolexpedition (190103), die sich in seiner Klimakunde der Antarktis (in: Handbuch der Klimatologie', hrsg. von Wladimir Peter Köppen und Rudolf Geiger, 1938) niederschlug. Meinardus entdeckte die antarktische Konvergenz im Ozean und berechnete die mittlere Höhe des antarktischen Kontinents" (ebd.). Mit kleinem e. Sichtvermerk des Germanisten und Dekans der Philosophischen Fakultät der Universität Berlin Erich Schmidt (18531913) am rechten oberen Rand.
