No Binding. Condizione: Near Fine. William Baziotes (illustratore). This is a scarce original 1948 announcement for an exhibition, Recent Paintings by Baziotes, at the Samuel M. Kootz Gallery at 13 E. 57th St, in New York City. William Baziotes (June 11, 1912 June 6, 1963) was an American painter who combined aspects of surrealism with abstraction, and contributed significantly to the beginnings of what would become abstract expressionism. The Samuel M. Kootz Gallery, opened only 4 years before the printing of this exhibition announcement and became a forceful leader in promoting the works of famous American abstract expressionist painters from the 1940s through the 1960s. Kootz represented and promoted some of the most important figures in early abstraction expressionism, including Baziotes who is often specifically mentioned in conjunction with the Kootz Gallery. This announcement contains a short essay by the Gallery owner, Samuel M. Kootz, discussing Baziotes' painting 'Cyclops' (reproduced on the facing panel) and how this painting became a focus of controversy among art reviewers whom Kootz felt lacked a grasp of work that had non-literal subject matter and an emphasis on art's plastic processes. Such were the early struggles of American abstraction to gain the widespread acceptance - an acceptance that European abstraction had enjoyed for many decades. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A single sheet of paper, twice folded to form four panels; letterpress printed on textured cream-colored paper with one deckle edge. Interior contains an essay and one black & white photo reproduction of a painting by Baziotes. Rear cover has a list of the paintings in the exhibition. Dimensions when folded: 5 x 5 1/2 . Condition: In exceptional condition, the only flaw being a shallow crease and a bit of weathering to the upper corners, and a small bit of darkening along the cover's right cut edge. Otherwise, flat, crisp and bright and unmarked. A museum quality piece of ephemera.
No Binding. Condizione: Good. Exhib. catal. poster app. 10" by 12" folded into 4 panels, incredibly fragile with 2 small tears, a VG copy, lists 13 Paintings, with a one page text by Randall Jarrell (LBE).

Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Very good condition. First edition. First edition. Folding prospectus, forming a large poster when unfolded (central folds). Scarce poster-prospectus for the 1949 Kootz Gallery exhibition of the "Intrasubjectives," marking an early formation of Abstract Expressionism. Exhibition prospectus for the Kootz Gallery presentation of the "Intrasubjectives," documenting an early moment in the emergence of what would later be termed Abstract Expressionism. The publication announces and frames the work of artists including Willem de Kooning, Arshile Gorky, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, Ad Reinhardt, and Mark Rothko, at a stage before the movement had acquired its later critical designation. Texts by Harold Rosenberg accompany the presentation, situating the group within a developing discourse of postwar abstraction. The design-by William Baziotes, Hans Hofmann, and Adolph Gottlieb-reflects the close alignment between artistic production and exhibition graphics characteristic of the New York avant-garde of the late 1940s. . Folding prospectus, forming a large poster when unfolded (central folds).
