Prima edizione Copia autografata
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. The Horrid Popish Plots Sammelband of four SCARCE to RARE pamphlets on the fabricated conspiracy, invented by Titus Oates and spread by Protestant activists, that the Pope and Catholics aimed to assassinate the Protestant King Charles II, burn London and Great Britain to the ground, "enslave" the English people to the falsehoods of Catholicism and to cause harm to the people of England and Scotland. IMPORTANCE & HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Published between 1679-1681 at the height of anti-Catholic fervor in England. One compelling point of propaganda used to fan the flames was blaming the infamous and tragic London Fire of 1666 on papist arsonists. ***Several of these works have only come to auction a handful of times in the past 50-100 years. Quite rare collection indeed as most of these pamphlets were discarded after circulation. OVERALL CONDITION: VERY GOOD & Textually complete. First work lacking frontispiece else complete. ABOUT THE COLLECTION OF PAMPHLETS The four rare pamphlets are bound together in a fine full leather modern binding: double filet gilt paneling: four gilt-bordered raised spine bands and a gilt-lettered red morocco spine label: thick, high-quality endpapers. Slim, small folio: 12" x 8". WORK 1: 1679, A Narrative and Impartial Discovery of the Horrid Popish Plot: Burning and Destroying London and Westminster by Captain William Bedloe. Published in London by Robert Boulter, John Hancock, Ralph Smith, and Benjamin Harris. Collated: [12], 27, [1] pp. Lacking frontispiece, textually complete. WORK 2: 1679, A Narrative of the wicked Plots carried on by the Seignior Gondamore for advancing the Popish Religion and Spanish faction. Heartily recommended to all Protestants by Rich. Dugdale, gent. Published in London by T.B. and sold at the Peacock at St. Paul's Cathedral. Collated and complete: [2], 16 pp. WORK 3: 1680, The Papists Bloody Oath of Secrecy, and Letany of Intercession for the carrying on of this present plot. With the manner of taking the Oath, upon their entring into any Grand Conspiracy against the Protestants. As it was taken in the chappel belonging to Barmbow-Hall, the residence of Sir Thomas Gascoigne, from William Rushton, a Popish Priest, by me Robert Bolron.Published in London by Randal Taylor. Collated and complete: 23, [1] pp. NOTE: Among other insidious plots, the author (Robert Barton) states that the Pope and his conspirators were plotting to assassinate every Protestant Head of State by stabbing or poison. WORK 4: 1681, A Collection of the substance of several Speeches and Debates made in the honourable House of Commons, relating to the Horrid Popish Plot, upon occasion of the bill for disabling James Duke of York from inheriting the imperial crown of this realm. Published in London by Francis Smith. Collated and complete: 20 pp. ABOUT THE HORRID POPISH PLOTS The Horrid Popish Plot was a fabricated conspiracy claimed by the English priest Titus Oates in 1678 to have been orchestrated by Roman Catholics to assassinate King Charles II and restore Catholicism in England (and other Protestant ruling countries). Despite being a fiction, it triggered widespread anti-Catholic hysteria, leading to the execution of more than twenty innocent Catholics between 1678 and 1681 and a real political crisis in England. CONDITION REPORT VERY GOOD+ Exterior and binding: FINE. Square spine, firm hinges and joints, tight pages. Some minor rubbing. Interior: VERY GOOD. Some light marking and wear on the endpapers. Most of the pages are clean and bright and vary between bright white to lightly toned with one or two darker toned pages. Signs of handling - page waviness, the odd scattered mark or smudge or small ink spill. Only a little scattered foxing and the odd rust spot. Some pagination has been corrected by hand in pencil. A number of the leaves have been closely cropped, affecting some page numbering. Rear pastedown with signed binder sticker indicating a 1997 rebind date and that PVA glue and flour paste were used.

Our copy lacks the title and the last pages 329-335. We think it a pity to split up this collection formed immediately upon publication of these trials. The book shows no provenance marking except for a name ''P. Parston'', perhaps not contemporary, written in the corner of the first fly leaf.
