A particularly desirable pairing of the first editions of Erasmus Darwin"s complete Botanic Garden, transforming botanical science into verse, illustrated with engravings by William Blake after Fuseli. In a contemporary half calf binding with marbled paper boards, later rebacked and… recornered, with spine labels. First editions of both parts: The Loves of the Plants, although designated Part II, was published first, in 1789; The Economy of Vegetation followed in 1791, completing The Botanic Garden. The second volume is slightly taller than the first. Part II is seldom encountered in its first edition, making its presence here particularly desirable. A fantastic poetic rendering of contemporary botany and science, in which Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802), physician, naturalist, inventor and grandfather of Charles Darwin. In The Economy of Vegetation, Darwin celebrates natural philosophy, invention and technological progress; in The Loves of the Plants, he popularises the Linnaean sexual system of botanical classification through the romances of personified flowers, stamens and pistils. The verse is accompanied throughout by extensive philosophical and scientific notes. Volume I is illustrated with an engraved frontispiece engraved by Anker Smith after Henry Fuseli, and nine further plates, one of which is folding. This copy includes William Blake"s engraving "The Fertilization of Egypt," after a design by Henry Fuseli, depicting Anubis and the Nile; the British Museum identifies the plate as Blake"s work. The four Portland Vase engravings are also by Blake, produced for The Economy of Vegetation. The four Portland Vase plates are bound at variance with the directions to the binder at the rear: "The Whole Vase" facing p. 53, "The First Compartment" facing p. 54, "The Second Compartment" facing p. 55, and "The Handles" facing p. 58, rather than all four facing p. 88 as called for. Volume II is illustrated with aesigned by Emma Crewe and engraved by Samuel Alken, seven further engraved plates and a vignette. The directions to the binder and errata leaf at the end of volume II have been neatly cut down and pasted to the foot of page 184. The first part also includes Darwin"s abolitionist passage inspired by Josiah Wedgwood"s celebrated medallion of the kneeling, chained slave, invoking the appeal: "Are we not Brethren?" Small ink mark to fore edge of front free endpaper of volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages characteristically age toned with light scattered spotting, heavier to fore edge, margins of plates, and first and last few leaves, more pronounced to volume I, notably to the frontispiece and pp. 184-202. Discreet archival repairs to the margins of the plates and first leaves of volume I; slight cropping to the margins of the Portland Vase plates. Small closed tear to lower margins of plates facing pp. 58 and 54 in the additional notes of volume I. Slight cockling to fore edge. Scuffing to both boards, wear to tips, but nice old patina. Both joints tender w. some losses, boards holding on. Minor losses at head and foot of spine, through to headband stitching. Text block firm and square, marbled endpapers bright, showing offset at turn in margins. Front hinge just starting, about 1 inch from head and foot; rear hinge is intact. Pencil notation of former owner to flies, w.ghost of old bookplate verso ffep. The 2 frontispiece plates with marginal foxing, w. offset to title pages. Text mostly bright and clean. Margins of some plates moderately foxed (less so in Part II) with browning offset to facing text: see more on condition of plates below.** Despite any drawbacks, this remains a nice copy of an important and popular work by Lichfield and Derby English AUTHOR, poet and physician ERASMUS DARWIN(1731-April, 18, 1802) which synthesized the foment of 18th cent. Enlightenment ideas of science with revolutionary and Romantic themes in art, particularly showcasing the work of Swedish botanist and father of taxonomy Carl Linnaeus. Industrial discussion of hemp, cotton, and clay are interwoven with racy-sounding verse on methods of plant reproduction. He first voices the idea of evolution in both the plant and animal world in the 1793 first edit. of Part I, in one of his many digressions, found in a note for Curcumin, (Part I, Canto I, line 65); a remark for which many account the life's work on the Theory of Evolution by his grandson, Charles Darwin. There is the occasional minor scuff, else a handsome set. Internally there is a bookplate to inside front board (Hayhurst). Endpapers and reverse of frontispieces are lightly dusty with occasional spots, there is a small amount of pencil to the rear free endpaper and to the list of plates, see images closely. There is a pale mark to base of frontispiece of Part II. Lacking one plate. Occasional pale dusty mark and spot, else in lovely, clean and crisp condition. Fine. There are two engraved frontispieces and a further 19 (of 20) engraved plates (including several by William Blake. Famous two part work, with 21 lovely engraved plates, several by William Blake. "The Botanic Garden, is a set of two poems, The Economy of Vegetation and The Loves of the Plants, by the British poet and naturalist Erasmus Darwin. The Economy of Vegetation celebrates technological innovation, scientific discovery and offers theories concerning contemporary scientific questions, such as the history of the cosmos. The more popular Loves of the Plants promotes, revises and illustrates Linnaeus's classification scheme for plants. [It].was intended to pique readers' interest in science at the same time as educating them. By embracing Linnaeus's sexualized language, which anthropomorphized plants, Darwin made botany interesting and relevant to his readers. In a more daring suggestion, however, Darwin emphasized the connections between humanity and plants, arguing that they are all part of the same natural world and that sexual reproduction is at the heart of evolution (ideas that his grandson, Charles Darwin, would later turn into a full-fledged theory of evolution)." A beautiful set of this famous Blake illustrated work.

First Edition of Part I; third edition of Part II, containing two more plates than the first edition of 1789. Darwin's first major literary work, and the chief source of his fame during his lifetime. "The Botanic Garden, an annotated scientific poem in Augustan couplets, appeared in two parts, of which the second, The Loves of the Plants (1789), was published before the first, The Economy of Vegetation (1791). Darwin decided to publish the second part of the work first because it was better suited 'to entertain and charm.' The first part of the work is more ambitious than the second, covering all natural philosophy, and embodying many of the researches and inventions of Wedgwood, Watt, Boulton, and others. The design of the totality was, Darwin wrote, 'To enlist Imagination under the banner of Science . . . to induce the ingenious to cultivate the knowledge of botany . . . and recommending to their attention the immortal works of the celebrated Swedish naturalist-Linnaeus'" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). The Botanic Garden is also important for the five plates in Vol. I engraved by William Blake: four engravings of the Portland vase, and the "Fertilization of Egypt," after a design by Fuseli. The third edition of part one is the only edition to include the striking Tornado plate. The Morning Chronicle was a newspaper founded in 1769 in London. The plate in Part I, opposite.p.87, of two Wedgwood cameos of Botany Bay and the abolition of slavery referenced by the poem, are not listed in the Directions to the Binder. Decorated by vignette at end of Proem, Part II. Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802) was a physician, natural philosopher, inventor and poet, and the grandfather of Charles Darwin. Associated with the Midland Enlightenment, he was a member of the Lunar Society of Birmingham and the Derby Philosophical Society. He set up practice in Lichfield and established the Botanical Society at Lichfield, to translate the Latin works of Carl Linnaeus. The first part of The Botanic Garden was originally entitled The Economy of Vegetation, the two parts having first appeared 1791 (Part I) and 1789 (Part II). This edition also contains plates drawn by the artist Henry Fuseli (1761-1825), two of which were engraved and signed by William Blake, while the four engravings of the Portland Vase have also been attributed to Blake. His Tornado plate appears for the first time in this title. Part II includes interludes featuring a dialogue between bookseller and poet. A set in original condition with plain bindings, housed in handsomely bound Solander boxes. Part I, 'The Economy of Vegetation,' involves a far-reaching survey of science and technology, with significant sections on evolutionary theories and numerous footnotes on electrical phenomena. Part II, 'The Love of the Plants,' is a 'single-minded catalogue of vegetable sex-life" (Norman). Darwin describes plant reproduction according to the Linnaean system "by means of a most ingenious and amusing personification of each plant, and often even of the parts of the plant. It is significant that botanical notes are added to the poem, and that its eulogies of scientific men are frequent" (Britannica). Darwin's Garden is also important for the five plates in Part I engraved by William Blake: "The Fertilization of Egypt," engraved after the painting by Henry Fuseli, and four engravings of the Portland Vase. Darwin, the grandfather of Charles, is notable for his "exposition of the form of evolutionism afterwards expounded by Lamarck" (DNB).
