Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. A Fine tight copy in a Fine bright unclipped dust jacket. A very crisp copy. This first person account by one of the great blues players is told in Big Bill's inimitable voice as recorded directly by Bruynoghe. Bill talks in his homey manner of his life, his songs, and his many friends in and out of music. In his lifetime he recorded over 250 songs and wrote many more which were recorded by others. Broonzy learned his blues trade in and around the farmlands of Mississippi then took his talents to Chicago in the 20's where he did most of his recording.

Eight loose slips of paper, each measuring about 5" x 3". Each slip is dated in either July, August, or September, 1955, and is signed twice by blues legend Big Bill Broonzy, using various iterations of his name ["Wm. Broonzy," "Bill Broonzy," etc.]. Each of this is from a peformance that Broonzy gave at Chicago's College of Complexes, a sort of roving radical venue for free expression, art, and discussion founded in 1951 by Slim Brundage. The first signature is followed by a math equation, which lists Broonzy's payment for the performance, less a 2% withholding for Social Security. Below that, Broonzy signs his name again, then writes the payment received and the date received. All of the writing is clearly in Broonzy's hand. Big Bill Broonzy was a blues musician from rural Arkansas whose career vascillated between fame and obscutiry during his lifetime. Recording several albums for Meltone Records, Perfect Records, and other minor labels, he would gain some notoriety in the 1930s, even filling in for Robert Johnson at a planned concert at Carnegie Hall in 1938 (Johnson had recently died unexpectedly). While he developed a following, he was still working as a janitor in Iowa in 1951, when the growing folk revival and new support from Pete Seeger brought him national fame and recognition as a blues performer. He toured Europe that year. While Broonzy's music was not as overtly political as some of his folk contemporaries, his music and the circumstances of his life brought him into close quarters with other black blues musicians, and folk artists of all races who were invested in Civil Rights and other left-wing movements of the period. Broonzy autographs are not common; signed photographs and record albums occasionally appear at auction and frequently sell beyond the high estimate, but we were unable to find similar examples of work-related ephemera signed by the blues great, and believe this collection to be an important artifact of this musician's career, dating from the brief period of fame he enjoyed before his relatively early death from throat cancer just three years later, in 1958.
