TALBOT'S TOMB in the Parish Church of St. Alkmund's Whitchurch Shropshire By William Henry Egerton Woodall Minshall and Co 1885 Published in Oswestry in 1885, this is the First Edition of this booklet on John Talbot, the legendary English Military Commander during the final stages of the Hundred Years War, he was known for his aggressive tactics and was heavily feared by the French. He died in The Battle of Castillion in 1453 after falling from his horse and finished off by a French battleaxe. His Grandson bought his remains back to England which were buried in St. Alkmund's Church in Whitchurch, Shropshire. During restoration work at the church his bones were uncovered, and the skull showed a distinct fracture confirming the historical legends of a battle-axe blow. The book is a hardback format running to 28 pages with illustrations and is inscribed by the author to his brother, G.H.E from W.H.E. 1885 at the top of the free front endpaper, also tipped onto this page is a short three sided letter from the author which reads Whitchurch Rectory, Salop. Mch 10 . 74 My dear George, A wonderful discovery - We have found the bones of Great Talbot. Come over before they are buried. The gash on the skull which felled the "English Achilles" to the earth is plainly seen [;] every single bone is embalmed. We have laid them out on a pall on the vestry table and I am lecturing all day to groups of people. As I gaze on the bones I can't help repeating again and again Shakspeare's words with reference to these identical bones. Bast[ard]: "Hew them to pieces! hack their bones asunder! whose life was England's glory", Gallia's wonder - Charles: "O! no; forbear! that which we have fled during his life, let us not wing it dead!" A great archaeological crux is settled for ever - I sent telegram to Family Antiquaries - Yr. aff. Brother WH Egerton In the letter he is asking his brother to bring dry plates which refers to early photographic equipment ("dry plates") to take pictures of the bones before they are reburied. Egerton also quotes directly from Shakespeare's Henry VI, Part 1 (Act 4, Scene 7), right after Talbot dies in battle. The Bastard of Orléans wants to hack Talbot's body to pieces, but Charles the Dauphin tells him to stop out of respect for how fearsome Talbot was in life. Here, the shameless sponge availing himself of other's hospitality, largesse, or greater resources, suffers one indignity and injury after another, and in a sense, gets his just deserts! The anecdotes are specific to the age -- the cadging a coach ride to the country, for example -- but are easily extrapolated and/or related to the appurtenances of modern times. The captions, written in a first person voice, come off as stilted as do almost all writing sounds to modern ears, but we believe the affectation would have been also heard as such back then, as the flowery language contributes to the humor, with the narrator seeking to apply an elegant or classy veneer to his base self-centered behavior. Condition: some rubbing along joints. Darkening to the red morocco. Blank preliminary and closing leaves heavily foxed. Front wrap with large corner chip, several inches along bottom and side edge, with repair by attaching of blank sheet in a closely matched color to the wrap paper. A moderate amount of soiling and staining of the wrap elsewhere.
