Aggiungi al carrelloCloth. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. A good copy of the 1st edition in the original publisher's cloth binding with new spine and title label. Contents complete with volume listing; half title; engraved black and white frontispiece portrait of Salvianus; vignette title page with black and white illustration of seabirds and a sea… monster; 2 further title pages; advertisement; contents listing; Memoir of Hippolito Salviani; text including numerous black and white illustrations; 32 hand coloured plates bound at the rear; and a 4 page publisher's catalogue. The plates are numbered to 31, but there are 2 versions of plate 27. The binding is very clean without the usual fading to the board edges. The new spine matches the boards. There is general wear to the corners, particularly the bottom corner of the front board. The original green endpapers have been retained and there is the decorative bookplate of Francis Hemming, the entomologist, to the front pastedown, which is scuffed with some loss at the top and bottom. The fep has an old crease, a spot and slight loss on the top and bottom edge. Text pages are largely unopened and are toned, particularly towards the edges. The plates are bright and well coloured with some toning to the paper - again more prevalent around the edges. The tissue guard to the frontispiece is browned. The publisher's catalogue has some tearing to the edges. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.

Aggiungi al carrelloCloth. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. A good copy of the first edition in the original publisher's cloth binding with 30 hand coloured plates of pigeons from drawings by Edward Lear. Lear provided the illustrations for Pigeons and Parrots in the Naturalist's Library, and his work is distinctive for its accuracy combined with an…ability to make the subject seem alive. The Pigeons volume is also unusual in the Naturalist's Library series because the backgrounds to the birds are partly coloured. Contents: volume listing; half title; black and white frontispiece portrait of Pliny; hand coloured vignette title page with ring pigeons; 2 further title pages; publisher's advert; contents listing; Memoir of Pliny by Andrew Crichton; and text with black and white illustrations and 30 hand coloured plates. Publisher's catalogues at the rear (20pp). The binding has been rebacked preserving the original spine and is sound and tight. The boards are faded around the edges with light surface scuffing. The spine is faded and with a circular dark mark towards the bottom. The original green endpapers are present: there is a small hole on the front pastedown and a tiny chip out of the side edge of the rear free endpaper. Text pages are generally clean with toning around the edges and the occasional spot or mark. Some of the pages have rough side edges eg the publisher's adverts and some plate edges. There is a small piece missing from the top edge of the volume listing page. The plates are clean and well coloured. The plate paper is toned around the edges and the tissue guards have some offsetting. Edward Lear (illustratore).
