Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. Hardcover. Brown leather over boards with raised cords. Title page dated 1811, copyright page dated 1807. 588 pages. In fair condition. Leather is heavily rubbed, upper corners of boards exposed. Leather on back cover is peeling in places. Upper inch of front hinge split. If there was lettering or a…title plate on the spine, it looks as though it has been lifted from the upper third of the spine. Binding remains tight. Pages are toned with foxing and damp-staining. Front attached endpaper is peeling, with a large piece missing in the middle. Some black and white illustrated plates throughout, at least one of which folds out, though it is torn. Overall this copy is well-worn, though sturdy.

Caleb Quotem the Parish Factotum Near Fine. Heath was a British artist who once described himself as a portrait & military painter. He was best known for his published engravings which included caricatures, political cartoons, and commentary on contemporary life. His early works often dealt with military scenes, including colour plates for The Martial Achievements, The Wars of Wellington, etc.[4], but from about 1820 on he focused on satire. Between 1827 and 1829, many of his works were published under the pseudonym Paul Pry (the name of an overly inquisitive stage character in a popular 1825 stage comedy by John Poole; also used the pseudonym Argus. He was described by Dr John Brown, biographer of John Leech as poor Heath, the ex-Captain of Dragoons, facile and profuse, unscrupulous and clever. See WIKI. Print. Original single-sheet steel engraving of a very fine quality. Overall size ca. 215 x 270 mm. Image size ca. 130 x 190 mm. A two-line caption engraved at bottom in elegant handtooled open-face and italic types. Engraved Artist's and Engraver's signatures underneath image. Engraved Publisher's line below. The print is in it…s original state, trimmed and gilded on three sides. It is printed with warmer ink, somewhat more dramatic in mood, with fine, crisp detail, subtlety and elegance. In overall fine condition. (Few marginal spots, not affecting image.) Preserved in pH-balanced, acid-free Renaissance archival paper. ~ A delicately executed steel engraving, representing a major illustrative work on 19th century Palestine, Syria, and Asia Minor. William Henry Bartlett (born London, 1809) was one of the foremost illustrators of topography of his generation. He travelled extensively throughout Britain, the Americas, and the Middle East, producing his work on location. In 1854 he made his last trip to the Holy Land; he died of fever on board a French ship on his return voyage to England. Bartlett's primary concern was to extract the picturesque aspects of a place and render "lively impressions of actual sights", as he wrote in the preface to "The Nile Boat" (London, 1849). His work became widely known through the numerous engravings after the original drawings and paintings he made. The interest in these engravings today is as much for the exquisite quality of the rendering and presentation of the architecture of the period, as it is for the representation of the landscape. Published in 1836 by Peter Jackson, Late Fisher, Son & Co. of London, it was originally accompanied by descriptions written by John Carne.
