Petty (1623-1687) is best remembered as a pioneer economist but was quite polymathic. Closely associated with Ireland and a founder of the Royal Society. This collection includes writings on medicine, philosophy, education, statistics, religion and demography (section headed 'The Multiplication of Mankind'), also towards end of Vol.II the editor's considerations on the authorship of The London Bills of Mortality issued as authored by John Graunt, but ascribed by some to Petty. 15 cm x 22 cm.

2pp., 12mo. On leaf with mourning border. With 7.5 x 12.5 cm frank cut from front of envelope, reading 'Calne September fifth 1837 | Nassau Senior Esq | Ilfracombe | Devon | Lansdowne'. In good condition, lightly aged. While Senior is known to have been a protégé of the Marquess of Lansdowne, this letter suggests that he acted as his agent. The Marquess asks him to 'secure me a lodging at the hotel at Ilfracombe or if full at any house in the town on Friday, when I expect to be there pretty early'. In a postscript he adds that he will 'drive to the hotel', and that 'Henry has probably written to you that he has been advised to go to Leamington'.

Should Auckland's statement become 'the subject of enquiry' it will be deemed 'perfectly satisfactory', there being 'no question as to the right of appointing a deputy, altho' there might be aas to the reduction of his salary, which was the circumstance referred to me'. The subject is one which must 'necessarily come within the view of the Committee of Finance, whose observations upon every public department it is my anxious wish that we may be enabled to anticipate'. Petty was Chancellor of the Exchequer between 5 February 1806 to 26 March 1807, and was the first holder of that office to take up residence in Downing Street.
