Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. First Edition. Cloth. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. xv, 363p. A very good copy, the covers of which are a bit blotchy and the spine is cocked, in a good d.j. which is complete, but which is worn at the top of the spine, has some wear at the top corners, has been price-clipped and has a stain mark, about the size of a dime, on the front panel. The front panel of the dust jacket is outstanding as it shows a very elegant, tall, slim, and fashionably dressed woman striding, with a cigarette in her left hand and a modern purse in her left. There is more in the picture, a London street with stores, autos, and even a bus. It's all in green (the color of her dress), black, and cream. The d.j. artist has put their initial at the bottom of the front panel and it seems to read ML and I wish I knew who did this memorable d.j. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Book.

Darling was a British banker, soldier, and politician. He was the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, 1941-1944; a member of Parliament for South Edinburgh, 1945-1957. He also served as the Director of the Royal Bank of Scotland, 1942-1957. In 1931, he anonymously published The Private Papers of a Bankrupt Bookseller, a fictional account of a British bookseller and followed this with The Bankrupt Bookseller Speaks Again in 1938. An omnibus edition, combining both titles, was published in 1947 under the title The Bankrupt Bookseller, giving him full credit for authorship. Darling delves into the life of a fictitious but typical British bookseller and the bookselling trade in the first decades of the 20th century.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (first printing). This copy signed by the author on the title page and dated 1942. 8vo. xv, 363pp. Reddy-brown cloth with a paper spine label (and a spare tipped-in at the rear). The cloth lightly faded at the backstrip, and with a small enclosed split to the head of the upper joint, which just impacts the spine label. Top edge lightly dust soiled, and the free endpapers very lightly toned and spotted. A very good copy in lightly dust soiled price-clipped dust wrapper, with several centimetres of corresponding loss to the head of the front panel-spine panel join, and a little accompanying creasing. The author's second book, the humorous fictional diary of a west end draper, presumably inspired by his own experiences managing the family draper business. The format of the present work is not dissimilar to the author's first book, 'The Private Papers of a Bankrupt Bookseller' (1931). The rear panel of this present dust wrapper includes some reviews of his previous effort, my personal favourite being "Badly presented, poorly edited.the outpourings of a genius". Sir William Young Darling (1885-1962) was the Unionist Member of Parliament in the House of Commons for the Edinburgh South constituency from 1945 to 1957, and also director of the Royal Bank of Scotland over roughly the same period. Signed by Author(s).
