Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. First edition. Paperback. 23 × 15cm, 144pp. Issue No 9 of the Transatlantic Review. This issue features Jack Kerouac's 'Joan Rawshanks in the Fog' - a hallucinatory, standalone vignette that Kerouac later incorporated into his experimental masterpiece, Visions of Cody. It offers a surreal look at Hollywood artifice through the lens of a Joan Crawford film set. Alongside it is Muriel Spark's 'Ladies and Gentlemen,' a sharp, witty display of the 'cunning tautness' that made her a dame of British letters. The issue is rounded out by the gritty, working-class poetry of Alan Sillitoe, then at the height of his 'Angry Young Man' fame following Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. Condition: There is some wear to the spine but otherwise this copy remains in good readable condition.

Both the introduction and foreword corrected in pen by the publisher or probably Haining? Three typed signed letters from Giles Gordon at Victor Gollancz to Peter Haining at The Hideaway, Mill Lane, Birch Green, Nr Colchester, Essex written on headed notepaper from 14 Henrietta Street, London W.C.2. The first letter dated 29th June, 1970 and consisting of about 115 words passes on information from Wilson about agreeing to his fee and saying he must read the stories first and that as he is 'frantically busy' he couldn't have it ready before September. Several notes on the letter in Haining's hand. The second letter addressed as above dated 21st September, 1970 consisting of about 92 words encloses a carbon of the foreword and says Wilson has asked for Haining to tone down the 'fulsome' remarks about him in the preface. The final letter addressed as above dated 30th September, 1970 and consisting of about 215 words in which Giles Gordon discusses a few changes and the dust jacket illustration and says it has now gone to the printers. He says he thinks it is impressive and is as good as 'The Wild Night Company' (Haining's book on Irish Terror Tales). He says he has cut down some of the 'estatic praise for the individual contributors as I think your enthusiasm rather ran away with you.' Peter Haining (1940-2007) was a prolific writer and editor on subjects ranging from crime and horror to witchcraft and fantasy. He became Editorial Director of the New English Library publishing house. Angus Wilson (1913-1991) English novelist and short story writer who in 1970 with Malcolm Bradbury established theÊMA creative writing courseÊat the University of East Anglia. Small punched hole on title page, otherwise very good. Very good.
