Neuware - Das fotografische Werk der Kölner Architekturfotografen Hugo (1879-1938) und Karl Hugo Schmölz (1917-1986) erfährt seit einigen Jahren eine große und bis heute stetig wachsende Anerkennung. Nach seiner Fotografenlehre und zahlreichen weiteren Stationen etablierte sich Schmölz Senior ab 1911 als A…rchitekturfotograf in Köln. Später übernahm sein Sohn Karl Hugo die Firma. Das lange in Vergessenheit geratene Werk der beiden Fotografen präsentiert sich heute in seiner Ästhetik und technischen Perfektion als atemberaubend eigenständig. Durch die Erfindung einer speziellen, additiven Belichtungstechnik gelang es Schmölz schon Anfang des Jahrhunderts, dunkle Innenräume in bis heute überwältigender Eleganz und Detailgenauigkeit zu dokumentieren. Das Buch versammelt erstmals eine zwischen den Jahren 1935 und 1957 überwiegend im Rheinland und dem Ruhrgebiet entstandene Serie mit Aufnahmen damals neu errichteter Kinosäle. Die heute größtenteils zerstörten Innenräume erscheinen in den vom Licht modellierten Fotografien nahezu skulptural, in jedem Fall wenig nostalgisch, sondern der Zeit merkwürdig entrückt und mit ihren feinsten Grauabstufungen fast hyperreal.
