Johann Joachim Winckelmann (geb. 1717 in Stendal, 1768 auf der Rückreise von Wien nach Rom in Triest ermordet) gilt als der Begründer der modernen Archäologie und der vergleichenden Kunstgeschichte. Nach dem Studium der Theologie und Medizin und einigen Jahren als Privatlehrer wurde er 1748 Sekretär und Bibliothekar des Grafen Brünau in Nötheniz bei Dresden, für dessen geplante Geschichte des Römischen Reiches er Material sammeln sollte. Daraus erfolgte in Dresden seine erste intensive Beschäftigung mit der Antike. 1755 veröffentlichte er die "Gedanken über die Nachahmung der Griechischen Werke in der Mahlerey und Bildhauer-Kunst" und ging im gleichen Jahr nach Rom, wo er anfangs Bibliothekar, seit 1763 Präsident der Altertümer und Scriptor der Vatikanischen Bibliothek war. Aus seinen umfassenden Studien der antiken Kunstwerke in Rom, Florenz und Neapel erwuchs u.a. seine "Geschichte der Kunst des Alterthums" (2 Teile, 1764). "Der einzige Weg für uns, groß, ja, wenn es möglich ist, unnachahmlich zu werden, ist die Nachahmung der Alten, und was jemand vom Homer gesagt hat, dass derjenige ihn bewundern lernet, der ihn wohl verstehen gelernet, gilt auch von den Kunstwerken der Alten, sonderlich der Griechen." Diese Worte Winckelmanns waren Programm für eine ganze Epoche; Nachahmung allerdings im Sinne Ciceros verstan den, dass die Kenntnis der Vorbil-der eine bestimmte Stufe im Bildungsgang darstellt, die befähigt, eigene schöpferische Werke hervorzubringen. Die für die Zeit so wichtige Aneignung der Antike geschah "durch seine (Winckelmanns) Augen, und sein Einfluss ist das ganze 19. Jahrhundert über spürbar geblieben" (Ueding).
