Rebound retaining light blue front and rear covers, small piece of front cover lacking without loss of text. The Horn Expedition left Adelaide in May 1894. After travelling by train to Oodnadatta, the party spent three and a half months 'scientifically exploring' the MacDonnell Ranges and Finke River basin. This journey took them through the country of Arrernte and Luritja people, who were crucial to the expedition's success, supplying natural history specimens, artefacts and information.

Cloth; a near-fine set. Number 129 of only 300 sets (the first 30 of which were bound in half leather). Winnecke was the leader of the expedition, and in 'the natural order of things these (journals and maps) should have been published in connection with the scientific and other records of the Horn Expedition, as both supplementary and complementary to them'; after a financial disagreement with W.A. Horn (the organiser and backer of the venture) this did not occur. The first edition appeared as South Australian Parliamentary Paper Number 19 of 1896; it was reissued in this octavo format the following year. McLaren 16969 (the original edition - not noting the very large map). [2 items].

Provenance: Charles Winnecke, with his ownership signature ('Chas Winnecke') on the half-title (below a 'With the Compliments of The South Australian Company' inkstamp). An unrelated gift inscription dated 1928 appears on a later blank page. Charles Winnecke (1856-1902), surveyor and explorer, 'entered the Government Survey Office in 1873 and went with the North Eastern Exploring Expedition to survey the border between South Australia and Queensland, circa 1877-81' ('Encyclopedia of Australian Science'). He achieved lasting fame as the leader of the Horn Expedition to Central Australia in 1894.

Watt) plus 24 plates on 13 leaves (printed rectos only) and a folding meteorological chart, 2 folding maps (a topographical map of Mount Watt and a Survey of Hermannsburg Mission Station), and a very large folding colour map (1210 × 1210 mm). Modern cloth lettered in gilt on the front cover; blank bottom margin of the main map slightly creased with one tiny tear expertly sealed; a fine copy. South Australian Parliamentary Paper 19 of 1896: only 650 copies printed. Winnecke was the leader of the expedition, and in 'the natural order of things these [journals and maps] should have been published in connection with the scientific and other records of the Horn Expedition, as both supplementary and complementary to them'. After a financial disagreement with W.A. Horn (the organiser and backer of the venture) this did not occur, and this first edition was published under the auspices of the South Australian branch of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia in conjunction with the Department of the Minister for the Northern Territory and the Survey Department. McLaren 16973; an octavo edition was published the following year (see McLaren 16969 - not noting the very large map).

Printer, This blue book edition of Winnecke was published the year before the publicly offered version. A note on the verso of the title explains that 650 copies were printed at a total cost of over £170. The objectives of the expedition, unlike those that preceeded it, were purely geological and ethnographical, rather than exploratory. In that respect, as noted by Wantrup, it was the precursor of a new era of exploration. The party was entirely financed by a wealthy philanthopist W.A. Horn and its declared aims were the "examination of the country from Oodnadatta to the Macdonnell Ranges. [and] the securing of photographs of the aborigines in their primitive state.".
