Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. [From the library of Dr. Ralph Gomes, Howard University.] Softcover. Good binding and cover. Shelf wear. Spine sunned. Clean, unmarked pages. Dr. Gomes was a professor at Howard University for 49 years in sociology and criminology. He was also a former Olympic athlete, representing Guyana in the 1960 Rome summer Olympics. Besides his scholarly work, Gomes was active in the black liberation movement. He had an impressive and deep collection of black art, historical advertising and iconography that spoke of the passage of black people and how they sought to record their life stories. His collection spanned from slavery, to antebellum life, to Jim Crow, to the Harlem Renaissance, to sport, to the civil rights movement. Winslow Homer (illustratore).…

Aggiungi al carrelloGilt Decorated Cloth. Condizione: VG+. 1st Edition. Small strips of repair tape to top and bottom of spine, foxing to about half of the plates, otherwise quite nice - famous because at least two of the 17 lithographs ("View of Arch at Davensport-and Residence of Hon. John D. Black" and "Arch Near Baptist Church, Davensport"), and possibly a few others, are by Winslow Homer, who was apprenticed at that time to the lithographic firm of John H. Bufford. They are among the earliest examples of his graphic work. (Tatham, p. 27-33.) Contains the bookplate of William Howe Green , an English weaver who immigrated to the U.S. in 1845 and became a resident of Danvers. Illustrated (illustratore).…

Aggiungi al carrelloLarge 8vo. (9 x 5 1/2 inches). Engraved portrait frontispiece and 17 tinted lithograph plates, drawn on stone by Winslow Homer and others, printed by J.H. Bufford, after photographs by W. Snell and sketches by M.C. Oby and others. Frontispiece and titlepage detached. vi, 195. Original blue ribbed morocco-grained cloth, the covers with elaborate borders blocked in blind, the upper cover with central area blocked in gilt with a rococo frame surrounding gilt lettering "Reception / and / Dinner / in honor of / Mr. Geo. Peabody / at the old town of / Danvers / Oct, 9. 1856", spine lettered in gilt, gilt edges. Tribute to the famous philanthropist with two early examples of Winslow Homer's work. The two lithographs by Winslow Homer, "View of Arch at Davenport and Residence of Hon. James D. Black" and "Arch Near Baptist Church, Davenport", both include his initials in the plate area and are amongst the earliest signed examples of his art. Homer answered a news advertisement and was apprenticed to Bufford's of Boston at the age of eighteen, for a period of about two years. Every aspect of the celebrations marking George Peabody's visit to the town where he was born are covered in detail in this work, in both words and pictures. The final section of the work concerns the establishment of the Peabody Institute in South Danvers. Peabody's name lives on today through the magnificent series of financial endowments he made during his lifetime, both in England and the United States: most notably the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Mass. and the Peabody Trust in London. Sabin 18517; Tatham Winslow Homer and the illustrated book (1992).…
