Blue cloth lightly rubbed and soiled; slight bumping/scuffing at spine ends and board corners. Some foxing/toning to text block edges. Mississippi school textbook student printed form on front and rear pastedown but with latter mostly obscured under past owner's personal bookplate; patch of surface peeling at top of front pastedown; some minor foxing and soiling to interior pages. Authors' ink signatures "R.A. McLemore" and "Nannie P. McLemore" written across their respective printed names on title page. Binding is firm. Mid-twentieth century school textbook presumably intended for students at the 5th-7th grade level with question/problem sets and suggested activities at the conclusion of each chapter. The McLemores offer a simplistic narrative history of the state and, although still certainly roseate, the text is more advanced than the bigoted tripe presented in the state's earlier "approved" textbooks by such authors as Mary V. Duval and Pearl Vivian Guyton. Richard McLemore and wife Nannie Pitts McLemore were far more accomplished historians than their preceding textbook authors - both McLemores did their graduate work in history at Vanderbilt University where Richard earned his doctorate thereafter teaching Mississippi Southern College (now University of Southern Mississippi) from 1938-1955 with his final year also serving as the school's acting president. McLemore was president of Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi from 1957-1968 and headed the Mississippi Department of Archives and History from 1969-1973.
