Separatim expressum. Condizione: Gut. p. 169-175. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Cover light marginated, author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: This is the text of the epigram as given in the recent Oxford edition. [.] In this poem the readers attention is called to a certain prince, who has the support of a mighty kingdom and is exalted above the firmament by Glory. He had convulsed the wide world with war, had crushed the kings and peoples of Asia, and was threatening to subject even Rome herself, his only remaining opponent, to grim slavery. But well on his way in his struggle for world-power he collapsed, all of a sudden, falling headlong, and was driven into exile from his own country. Such is the divine power of the Goddess, with such a forceful nod will the deceitful Hour in an instant wreck mortal life. - Wikipedia: Erik Karl Hilding Wistrand, född 24 januari 1907 i Göteborg, död 2 oktober 1998, var en svensk latinist. Reprint. Condizione: Gut. p. 103-106. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: First I place the problematic passage in its context by giving a summary of the epistle. It is a protrepticus, an exhortation to young Lollius Maximus to take up philosophical study seriously in order to learn how to lead a rational and happy life. The Iliad, Horace says, offers striking illustrations of the miseries that are caused by passions uncontrolled by reason. The Odyssey, on the other hand, presents us with a model hero who by his moral force is able to withstand the lures of the Sirens and Circe. But we are not heroes, you say; we are just ordinary people. - Wikipedia: Erik Karl Hilding Wistrand, född 24 januari 1907 i Göteborg, död 2 oktober 1998, var en svensk latinist. Condizione: Gut. p. 147-155.
