Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. Illustrated Edition. THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS BY CLEMENT C. MOORE ILLUSTRATED BY ARTHUR RACKHAM HARD COVER. I have had some difficulties identifying the edition involved here as there is no date and the online citations are all over the place. What I have not had difficulty with is verifying that this particular copy of this classic is in very good condition. Please find a very nice copy of: The Night Before Christmas, by Clement C. Moore, with illustrations by Arthur Rackham. This small-sized hard cover book (5 ¾ x8 ¾ inches, 37 pages) was published by George C. Harrap & Co. of London, with no date indicated but I thought it was about 1932. The book is bound in green cloth with black titles on the cover. The book is elaborately illustrated, with an attractive pattern in red & white on the endpapers, a color frontispiece and three similar full page color plates and countless b&w illustrations on many pages. The first letter of each page is printed in red. Condition: This is really where this book shines. The book is in very good condition, something one cannot really say, surprisingly, for many of the copies found online. The hard covers are a bit dust dulled and speckled with muted white dots (barely visible; please see the photos) and the spine is a darkened. There is some very minor bumping to the corners and spine tips. Inside, the book is unmarked and the pages and plates are clean and bright, with one small exception, a light finger smudge on the left-hand margin of the frontispiece. There is some toning coming through at the center of the book, barely visible. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.…

Condizione: Near Fine. First US edition, first printing. 277pp. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED BRITISH FANTASY In a whimsy-laced journey through time, the trickster Puck summons visitors from across England's past-from Roman legionaries to Norman knights and Magna Carta-era merchants-each weaving captivating stories steeped in history and folklore. Framed by evocative poems, these vignettes blend fantasy with national legacy, culminating in a celebration of England's evolving identity. The first US edition is notable for its four haunting color plates by Arthur Rackham, absent from the British edition. This copy is further distinguished as an extra-illustrated example, enriched by a previous owner with thirteen additional half-tone illustrations depicting scenes of Ancient Rome. The juxtaposition of Kipling's imaginative retelling of English history with Roman imagery creates a layered dialogue between text and illustration, offering a fascinating glimpse into the interpretive creativity of early 20th-century collectors. [Livingston, 283]. Mild foxing frontis tissue-guard, extremities rubbed, front and rear hinges repaired, internally clean, a near fine copy. Publisher's green cloth, pictorially stamped in black with image of a ship, titled in gilt, teg. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham; extra-illustrated with thirteen additional half-tone illustrations depicting scenes alongside Kipling's stories. (illustratore).…

Condizione: Near Fine. First edition, first printing. Octavo. ix, [i], 181, [3]. 10" x 7.5" RACKHAM-ILLUSTRATED OPERA Two greats came together as Arthur Rackham illustrated the text of Wagner's operatic masterpiece, The Ring of the Niblung, first performed in 1876. Published as part of a two volume series, Siegfried & the Twilight of the Gods contains the second and third days of the trilogy, featuring the great work's climax. Seigfried's Valkyrie love, Brünnhilde, reclaims the ring from the gods, returning it home to the Rhine maidens, and throws herself on her lover's funeral pyre, bringing about the god's and Valhalla's theatrical downfall. Rackham captures the majesty of Wagner's Norse and Germanic influences, casting the opera in dark, roiling backgrounds and dainty, dramatic faces. This 1911 first edition includes thirty tipped-on illustrations, including frontispiece, with all tissue guards present. This copy has had an ad for Leicester Galleries' 1910 Arthur Rackham Exhibition laid in the front. Very mild shelf wear with small spots of wear to corners, light toning to front board, still near fine. Overall a tight and internally clean copy. Publisher's quarter green cloth over cream decorative paper, illustratively stamped in gilt, illustrated endpapers. Thirty full color, tipped-on illustrations, including frontispiece, by Arthur Rackham with all tissue guards present. (illustratore).…

Condizione: Near Fine. First trade edition, first printing. Octavo. 255, [3]. 10" x 7.75" RACKHAM & THE TROLL KING Peer Gynt: a poet, a braggart, and a renowned Norwegian folk hero who must find a woman's love or be destroyed. Peer's travels, first captured in Henrik Ibsen's 1867 play-in-verse, take him inside mountains to troll kings, under Arabic tents among seductive tribesmen's daughters, and back home to Norway to his childhood love. Despite his rapidly deteriorating health, Arthur Rackham transported readers to desert scenes, unusual for him, as well as to his typically ghoulish fairytale settings. With the troll king glowering from the dust jacket, this first trade edition is a testament to Rackham's artistic versatility, even toward the end of his life, as a pillar of Golden Age illustration. [Latimore & Haskell, 74]. Gently pressed spine tips, slight bump front board upper edge and upper corners, faint offset browning endpapers, still near fine, in near fine dust jacket with shallowly chipped corners and tips, several short closed tears upper edge, in mylar cover. Publisher's full brick red buckram, illustratively stamped in gilt, top edge stained brick red, illustrated endpapers, in Arthur Rackham dust jacket (15/- NET). Twelve full color illustrations by Arthur Rackham, with captioned tissue guards, and numerous black and white vignettes. (illustratore).…

Limited edition, numbered copy from a total edition of 410, of which 400 were offered for sale, signed by Arthur Rackham on the limitation leaf. Publisher's limp vellum, lettered in gilt on the front cover; decorative endpapers; top edge gilt. Title printed in green and black. 42 [3] [3 blank] pp. Signed limited vellum-bound issue of Goblin Market illustrated by Arthur Rackham. Christina Rossetti's narrative poem Goblin Market, first published in 1862, is one of the best-known works of Victorian poetry. The poem recounts the story of two sisters, Laura and Lizzie, who encounter goblin merchants offering seductive fruit. Its imagery of temptation, redemption, and sisterly devotion has generated extensive literary interpretation since the nineteenth century. The present edition unites Rossetti's poem with illustrations by Arthur Rackham, among the most influential British book illustrators of the early twentieth century. His designs-combining delicate line work with atmospheric colour plates-create a visual interpretation that emphasizes the poem's eerie and fantastical qualities. The 1933 Harrap issue is Rackham's major treatment of the text and is regarded as one of the notable late works of his illustrated book career. . Condizione: Near Fine. Signed/Limited edition. 44, [1]pp. 9.75" x 6.25" RACKHAM'S RATS RUN RAMPANT Reaching back into medieval legend, the story of the Pied Piper has endured through centuries of reinvention: carried first by oral tradition, then preserved in stained glass, chronicles, and later fairy-tale collections. Johannes von Zimmern's sixteenth-century account appears to be the first to introduce the now-inseparable plague of rats, a detail later carried forward by the Brothers Grimm and, most memorably in English, by Robert Browning, whose spirited verse finds an ideal visual counterpart in Arthur Rackham's eerie yet luminous illustrations. Whether born of historical tragedy or folkloric invention, the tale remains endlessly adaptable. This signed limited edition carries the Piper's long afterlife neatly into the twentieth century, one of only 400 signed and numbered copied issued for sale, this being number 337, signed by Rackham on the limitation page. Some waving/bubbling to endpapers, with light subsequent waving to pages, overall very clean internally, limp vellum clean and bright, still overall near fine in good only, chipped publisher's tissue dust jacket, in mylar cover in near fine publisher's slipcase with some toning extremities and mild repair to upper seam. Publisher's limp vellum, titled in gilt, in partial publisher's tissue jacket, housed in publisher's slipcase, paper title label. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham in four full-color illustrations, with numerous in black and white. (illustratore). Signed.…

Condizione: Near Fine. Limited edition. CRAZED FOR FAIRIES Escaping from the rapid industrialization of the turn of the century, Edwardian England's imagination turned to fairies, finding perfect matches in tales like Peter Pan and the illustrations of Arthur Rackham. Eerie and fae, Rackham indulged himself in Shakespeare's Midsummer-Night's Dream with the dreamy Fairyland residents, Puck's cheeky endeavors, and ornate landscape details. William Heinemann published this signed limited edition in 1908, beautifully capturing the luxury of the golden age illustrated gift book in its full red morocco binding with Rackham's illustrations matching the dream-like quality that comes from stepping into Shakespeare's most performed comedy. Limited to 1000 numbered and signed copies, of which this is 662, signed by Rackham on the limitation page. [Latimore & Haskell, p. 32]. Head and tail of front joint with 1" split but still holding firm, slightly bowed boards, light shelf wear, still near fine. Bound by J. May in full red crushed morocco, ruled and fleurons stamped in gilt with floral spine decorations, teg. Forty tipped-in color illustrations mounted on brown paper by Arthur Rackham with thirty black and white drawings. (illustratore). Signed.…

Condizione: Near Fine. Edition de Grand Luxe. Quarto. x, 69, [3]. 11" x 9". Text in French. SIGNED RACKHAM, ONE OF TWENTY COPIES In Rip's gnarled face, the delicate fairies' trailing wings, and the eerie gentlemen playing ninepins, Arthur Rackham's Rip Van Winkle displays the breadth of his artistic skills. First published by William Heinemann in 1905, Rip Van Winkle catapulted Rackham into fame, establishing his longstanding relationship with the publisher as well as Ernest Brown and Walter Phillips, the owners of the Leicester Gardens. After the wildly successful 1905 presentation of his illustrations at the gallery, Phillips and Brown were so impressed with the mingled elegance and grotesqueness of Rackham's illustrations that they referred him to illustrate Heinemann's Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, the work that would solidify his position as the great of Golden Age illustration. Not only did Rip Van Winkle launch Rackham into publishing success with Heinemann, but the book also established his international presence. Published in Paris by Hachette et Cie the year after the London first edition, this luxurious limited edition signed by Rackham was limited to just twenty copies, printed on Japon paper. His images make up the second half of the book, allowing readers to enjoy the story twice, once in its French text and again with Rackham's haunting illustrations in this truly scarce edition with its original vellum wraps bound in. Limited to 20 numbered copies signed by the artist, of which this is 15. Signed by Rackham on the limitation page. [Unnacounted for in Lattimore & Haskell, p. 26 for unsigned French edition, limited to 200 copies]. Gently rubbed boards and extremities, slight rippling to pages, owner bookplate to front pastedown, mild foxing to binder's blanks and tissue guards, still near fine. Overall a square and internally clean copy. Bound in half crushed red morocco over marbled paper boards, spine title stamped in gilt, marbled endpapers, with publisher's limp vellum wraps bound in, printed on Japon paper. Fifty-one color, tipped-on illustrations by Arthur Rackham, with captioned tissue guards intact. (illustratore). Signed.…
