Machines ranged from ground-strafing fighters and fighter bombers to specially designed armoured ground attack aircraft such as the Ilyushin series and Henschel Hs 129B, improvised but succesful anti-tank adaptations such as the Hurricane lld and Junkers JU 87G, and the devastating rocket-firing Typhoons over Western Europe. This is the first comprehensive and well illustrated study tracing the evolution of these aircraft, providing a detailed account of their armament and operational use. Rod and his brother Jerry both became Spitfire pilots during World War II, leaving their home in Canada only to find themselves - purely by chance - serving together in the defense of Malta during 1942. Jerry had already gained some fame as the first pilot ever to land a Spitfire on an aircraft carrier (due to a faulty fuel feed after being launched to fly to the beleaguered island). Both showed immediate promise as fighter pilots, but by the end of that year Jerry was dead - last seen chasing a German bomber out to sea - while Rod had become an 'ace' and would receive the D.F.C. (Distinguished Flying Cross). Two years later, serving as a squadron commander in Western Europe, he claimed six Messerschmitts down within a single week, and was involved in the shooting down of the first German jet aircraft to fall to British Commonwealth fighters. He ended the war as one of Canada's highest scoring aces, with more than 13 victories to his credit. Qualifying after the war both as an aeronautical engineer and as a barrister, he brought a keen and analytical intellect to a passionate interest in aviation and aerial combat, writing many letters and articles of great depth and insight. A clean very presentable copy.

Condizione: Gut. 445 pages, numerous b/w-photos, maps, tables, title in gold print on spine, Appendix, Crete Claims, Bibliography, Index, Personnel, Place Names, Air Forces, Maps, Tables, Dust Jacket (with tears and glued), The air battle for Yugoslavia, Greece and Crete began in June 1940 with the Italian declaration of war. In the past there has been much controversy amongst air historians about many of the details of the operations. For example, it was here that "Pat" Pattle, believed by many tro be the Royal Air Forces un kknowntop scoring fighter pilot of the wole war, saw most of his acttion. Just hof many kills did de archieve and hof? Since the war, RAF claims have been totally repudiated by the Italians (although hitherto on little evidence), while the suddenness and violence of the German Blitzkrieg through Yugoalavia and Greece, and the invasion of Crete ensured that many recorfs were lost. By careful sifting of the records available - British, Italian, German - and by many interviews and much correspondence with survivors or relatives of those present including the indigenous population, the team of Shores, Cull and Malizia seeks to present the full picture for the first time. An undoubted contribution to our understanding of the war, with Many new and priceless photographs, this book is an essential addition to the libbraly of any military hostorian, aviation specialist and enthusiast.
