Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. "PLAINVILLE, U.S.A. is the revelation of the life of an American town, a community portrait, if you will. James West, a member of an anthropological research project, moved to Plainville in 1940 to observe how a typical 'backward' farming community reacted to the influences of its neighboring, more 'modern' communities. The result of his year's residency in Plainville is this detailed and intimate picture of its townspeople - a picture that is equally pertinent today. Written from an anthropological point of view, but with a minimum of technical language, 'Plainville U.S.A.' is a study of the townspeople's daily lives. Here we see at close range the processes of socialization that mold a small child into the adult : the groups and informal cliques he joins for the purposes of work, entertainment, and gossip; the problems that concern him; and his relation to the world beyond his own community. The author studies the town itself - its history, resources, and economic structures as well as the social organization. " The result is a book that was quickly to become a classic work in the fields of sociology and anthropology - a work that rose above any such classification - a work that became a classic. Surprisingly, the book is now out of print. TITLE : Plainville, U.S.A.
