"Donald Sage's first-hand account of everyday life in the Scottish Highlands of the early nineteenth century is, in the words of a recent Scotsman article, a "little classic". Sage is a lively and involved writer. In rambling detail which is never dull, he writes of himself; of people of all stations; of a largely vanished way of life in town and country. He describes the districts he knew in fine and memorable prose. Known in his time as a gentle preacher, in his book Sage can be caustic. Public figures frequently deserved his ire. In well-known passages he damns landlord tyranny and the hated policy of clearance disrupting old communities. He is partial perhaps, but through his eyes we see events as many another concerned contemporary saw them. But Sage's book does not deal mostly with such large events as clearance or the Meikle Ferry disaster, so vividly described. Mostly the experience, the attitudes, are personal. It is a pains- taking and candid record of everyday life around him lived out in closely knit communities. Remote by our standards, they were still troubled by old superstitions, by illnesses badly treated, and knew also the psychological despair of life in any age. Sage is much concerned with such matters, and with all issues affecting the community: with the Church, of course, and also education. Few contemporary records of Highland life in Sage's day survive, and none more readable than his.
