An exhibition organised in co-operation with the Japan Foundation, Tokyo. German and English text, colour plus black and white reproductions. The present exhibition focuses on the Gutai Art Association, founded in 1954…. Its members were active as pioneers in avant-garde art of the post-war era in Japan. Since the Meiji era, Japanese art has frequently been influenced by art movements from overseas. In particular, the Gutai group has reacted very sensitively to movements abroad. In addition, the group was able to introduce its work to the U.S. and Europe as early as the fifties. Their work could, of course, be seen as deviating from what is seen and felt to be Japanese, but it is rather the work of Japanese artists reacting to comtemporary art movements throughout the world, refining their own sensibility.A heavy book, may need extra postage.
