Mai 1813, studirte von 1832-36 in Berlin und Bonn, wurde 1836 mit der Diss.: "Nonnulla de conlagiis" zum Doctor promovirt und liess sich nach beendigter Staatsprüfung daselbst als Arzt nieder. Seine ersten Schriften waren: "Neue Methode des Schielauges durch subcutane Tenotomie" (Berlin 1840) und "Heilung der Schwerhörigkeit durch ein neues, höchst einfaches Verfahren zur Einleitung von Dämpfen in die Ohrtrompete" (Berlin 1841). Einige Jahre später veröffentlichte er: "Die nervöse Schwerhörigkeit und ihre Behandlung durch eine neue Methode" (Berlin 1844; 2. Aufl. 1866), ohne dass auch in der 2. Auflage die inzwischen von WILDE, TOYNBEE und v. TEOELTSCH begründete neue otiatrische Schule irgend eine Berücksichtigung fand. Seine "neue" Methode bestand in dem auch von KRÄMER früher angewendeten mystischen Verfahren, die nervöse Schwerhörigkeit durch Eintreibung von Dämpfen in die Trommelhöhle heilen zu wollen. Immerhin gebührt Wolff das Verdienst, in dieser Schrift zuerst auf den ventilirenden Einfluss aufmerksam gemacht zu haben, welchen die Respiration auf das Mittelohr ausübt, wenn er auch noch nicht in der Lage war, dafür einen Experimentalbeweis beizubringen. Auch als Dichter hat er sich bekannt gemacht. Viele seiner Gedichte, auch ein Trauerspiel (1838), erschienen unter dem Pseudonym Ernst Waller. Anfangs nur in seinen Mussestunden mit Poesieen beschäftigt, verfasste er vom Jahre 1854 ab eine grosse Zahl dramatischer Werke. Er starb 6. Nov. 1886."
