Mit Widmung des Autors. - Emile Faguet, dans son Dix-Neuvième Siècle, condamne avec une brutalité aussi étonnante qu'injuste la critique d'art de Gautier: «Le fond était nul. Pas une idée». La seule chose qu'il lui concède, c'est sa capacité à «saisir l'impression dominante d'une oeuvre, et la reproduire». L'éminent historien reprend donc ce que Sainte-Beuve avait dit une quarantaine d'années plus tôt avec une pointe d'ironie mais non sans admirer le «système de transposition» du poète-critique: Gautier «réduit un tableau à l'article. Ce sont là de ces comptes rendus qui parlent et qui vivent». Sainte-Beuve savait très bien que les reproductions courantes - les gravures sur bois dont nous reproduisons un certain nombre - ne font que rendre grossièrement le sujet et point l'atmosphère - et que la parole du poète-salon-nier est souvent plus suggestive que les eaux-fortes, les lithographies ou les rares photos qu'on commençait à prendre des toiles les plus célèbres.
