Offered is a signed and inscribed first edition, first printing of "Born a Gemini: Memoirs of a Sailor" written by Captain Irby F. Wood published in 1973 by Vantage Press, Inc. out of New York City. A hardcover with dust jacket containing 224 pages. With three photos: "The Last of the 'Alcoa Mariner'"; "Coming alongside the rescue ship, the 'Turret Cape'"; and "The 'Alcoa Mariner's' survivors on the deck of the 'Turret Cape'". From the dust jacket, reading in part, "From his first voyage as an ordinary seaman on the S.S. 'Antinous,' through many years and aboard many ships, Captain Wood tasted life in all parts of the world, using the ships he sailed as his 'magic carpets.' He lived through the Great Depression of the thirties, spending a part of the time 'on the beach'; he sailed ships into danger areas during the Spanish Civil War. His ship was torpedoed during World War II, and some later trips involved him with smugglers and incidents which came close to causing him much trouble." This book is in very good condition, with a tight binding, sharp corners, with minimal wear, occasional spotting. Presentation bookplate from The City of Sheffield Eduction Committee, for punctual attendance at The Duchess Road Council School, to Cecil Robinson, signed by the Head Teacher, Edward Cattell, B.A. A remarkable book: it looks as though it has sat on a shelf for 100 years, without being handled.
